This role combines hardware engineering, device troubleshooting, and fleet reliability ownership to maintain high uptime across 200K+ devices. The engineer partners with software, device management, and operations teams to diagnose issues, improve hardware standards, and optimize device performance in real-world conditions.
This role also owns evaluation and implementation of enterprise device management (MDM/EMM) solutions to enable remote diagnostics, improve update reliability, and scale device operations. The position requires strong technical judgment, cross-functional collaboration, and ownership of device platform strategy.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Own end-to-end hardware performance and reliability of Android device fleet, including monitoring, diagnostics, and issue resolution.
  • Lead hardware troubleshooting and root cause analysis for field issues (battery, thermal, display, connectivity, power).
  • Evaluate, implement, and optimize enterprise MDM/EMM solutions (e.g., Esper) to improve remote access, observability, and OTA update reliability.
  • Define and validate hardware standards and specifications for new device models; conduct benchmarking and certification.
  • Partner with Android software, backend, and device management teams to resolve hardware-software integration issues.
  • Manage vendor relationships (OEMs, hardware suppliers, MDM providers), including evaluation, escalation, and performance management).
  • Evaluate tradeoffs between GMS-certified and non-GMS devices, including impact on application compatibility, update delivery, operational complexity, and total cost of ownership.
  • Drive hardware lifecycle strategy including procurement guidance, failure tracking, replacement strategy, and end-of-life planning.
  • Review and validate compatibility of ancillary equipment (e.g., charging systems, mounts, cables) to ensure reliable device operation in field environments.

Education and Work Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree plus 3 years of related work experience
OR advanced degree with 1 year of related work experience
OR combination of education and experience deemed equivalent (Required)
  • Acceptable areas of study include Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (Preferred)
  • 4-7 years Experience in hardware engineering, device reliability, IoT/edge systems, and Android based devices (tablets, phones, embedded systems) (Required)
  • 4-7 years experience Hands-on experience troubleshooting hardware issues in production environments (battery, thermal, connectivity, etc.) (Required)
  • 4-7 years Experience with Google Mobile Services (GMS) certification requirements and Android device compliance (CTS, GTS, VTS). (Required)
  • 4-7 years Experience with MDM/EMM platforms (e.g., Esper, AirWatch, Intune) including device control and OTA updates. (Required)
  • 4-7 years Experience working with external hardware vendors/OEMs and managing device quality. (Required)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Hardware Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Deep expertise diagnosing hardware issues across power, battery, thermals, display, and connectivity.
