Job description

Job Title: Construction Laborer

Job Description

This role supports heavy civil and utility construction projects by performing hands-on site work, including digging, trenching, laying PVC conduit and pipe, and assisting with concrete and general labor tasks. You will work closely with the site crew to safely move materials, set up trench boxes and shoring, and support demolition and rigging activities to keep projects on schedule and within quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Dig and trench for civil and utility construction projects, including creating and backfilling trenches for PVC conduit and pipe installation.
  • Lay and install large quantities of Schedule 40 PVC, ensuring proper alignment, depth, and support according to project specifications.
  • Set, position, and remove trench boxes and shoring systems to maintain safe excavation conditions.
  • Move, stage, and organize construction materials, tools, and equipment around the job site as directed.
  • Assist with loading and unloading materials and equipment from trucks using proper rigging and lifting techniques.
  • Connect straps and rigging to machinery, materials, and equipment to support safe lifting and movement operations.
  • Perform general labor duties such as site cleanup, debris removal, and preparation of work areas for concrete pours and other activities.
  • Use hand and power tools, including jumping jacks, plate compactors, grade machines, and shovels, to complete assigned tasks.
  • Support demolition activities by breaking up and removing materials as required for site work.
  • Assist with concrete-related tasks, including preparation of forms, placement support, and site finishing work.
  • Follow all safety procedures and participate actively in the site’s safety culture, including proper use of PPE and adherence to trenching and excavation safety standards.
  • Work collaboratively with foremen, equipment operators, and other crew members to complete heavy civil and utility projects efficiently and to quality expectations.

Essential Skills

  • 2–5 years of experience as a construction laborer, heavy civil laborer, site work laborer, or similar role in civil and utility construction.
  • Demonstrated ability to dig and trench safely and efficiently for civil and utility projects.
  • Proven experience laying and installing large volumes of Schedule 40 PVC pipe and conduit.
  • Hands-on experience setting and working with trench boxes and shoring systems.
  • Ability to perform general construction labor, including moving materials, assisting with concrete pours, and supporting site work.
  • Experience using hand and power tools such as jumping jacks, plate compactors, grade machines, and shovels.
  • Ability to connect rigging and straps to machinery, materials, and equipment for lifting and moving operations.
  • Comfort working around heavy equipment and in active construction zones.
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to site safety protocols, especially in trenching and excavation work.
  • Physical ability to work outdoors in hot conditions, perform heavy manual labor, and stand, bend, and lift throughout the shift.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • OSHA 10 certification strongly preferred.
  • Experience with concrete work, including preparation for concrete pours and related tasks.
  • Familiarity with rigging practices and safe material handling procedures.
  • Ability to follow directions, work as part of a team, and adapt to changing site conditions and priorities.

Work Environment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times, and the site maintains a strong safety culture, particularly around trenching and excavation activities. The environment is physically demanding and fast-paced, with frequent use of hand and power tools, trench boxes, shoring systems, and earth-moving equipment.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00/hr.
