Job description

Vertex is offeringsummer/fall field employment opportunitieswithin ourTank Cleaning Division, ideal for apprenticePipefitters, Welders, Boilermakers and Mechanical Tradeslooking to gain real-world industrial experience. The role provides valuable hands on exposure toconfined space entry,industrial cleaning operationsandsafety-critical work environments- experience that directly supports long-term careers in the trades. Successful candidates will work alongside experienced teams on active projects and gain practical skills that strengthen apprenticeship and field resumes.


This istemporary, project-based work with projects anticipated to run throughout the summer and fall season.

Previous confined space experience is considered an asset but not mandatory - site safety training and orientation will be provided.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Work in confined spaces for shifts of up to 2 hours
  • Wash, scrape and drain tank interiors using a variety of special tools and pressure washers
  • Participate in the installation and removal of energy isolation devices, blanks, blinds, etc.
  • Rig in / rig out ventilation, wash and vacuum equipment
  • Accurately report conditions within confined spaces
  • Assist confined space entry personnel in donning and doffing required PPE when entering and exiting confined space when not in confined space
  • Perform assigned emergency response roles including confined space rescue
  • Actively participate in safety meetings, tool box meetings, permit and hazard assessment reviews
  • Prepare hazard assessments as appropriate
  • Maintain composure during high-stress and multi-tasking challenges
  • Support cleaning of respiratory protective equipment
  • Complete required inspection records for PPE and equipment
  • Complete required inventory of trailers daily and at end of the project
  • Support outside of space operations, maintaining support equipment in berm/work area as directed


Candidate Qualifications


  • Interest in gaining industrial field experience
  • Comfortable working in physically demanding environments
  • Physically able to lift and carry up to 45 kg
  • Ability to stand, crouch, kneel and work for extended periods
  • Able to follow direction and work as part of a team
  • Willing and able to work away from home in Northern Alberta for the entirety of the projects
  • Ability to provide own transportation to mobilization site in Nisku
  • Willingness to stay in local accommodations when required (if applicable)
  • A core requirement of this role is entering confined tanks for cleaning while utilizing a supplied-air breathing apparatus/mask; candidates must be completely comfortable in tight spaces and experienced or highly comfortable working under respirator air

  • Clean Shaven Fit Testing (Provided by Vertex)
  • Pre-Access Orientation (Provided by Vertex)

  • Energy Safety Canada H2S Alive
  • Energy Safety Canada Confined Space Entry and Monitor
  • CSO (Common Safety Orientation)
  • CSTS 2020
