Temporary Civil Engineer Student information

What is a temporary civil engineer student?

Temporary Civil Engineer Students are individuals, usually enrolled in a civil engineering degree program, who work on a temporary basis—often during summer breaks or as part of a co-op or internship program. They assist professional engineers with tasks such as drafting, site inspections, data analysis, and project documentation. This role provides students with practical, hands-on experience and exposure to real-world engineering projects, helping them apply their classroom knowledge and develop essential skills for their future careers. These positions are typically short-term and designed to complement academic learning.

What types of projects and tasks can a temporary civil engineer student expect to work on during their placement?

As a Temporary Civil Engineer Student, you can expect to assist with a variety of tasks such as site inspections, drafting plans, supporting senior engineers with calculations, and participating in team meetings. You may be involved in real-world projects like road or bridge construction, water management systems, or infrastructure maintenance. The role often provides hands-on experience with engineering software, data collection, and collaboration with professionals from multiple disciplines, offering valuable insight into the industry’s work environment and processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary civil engineer student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Civil Engineer Student, you generally need foundational knowledge in civil engineering principles, strong analytical skills, and current enrollment in a relevant engineering program. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office is typically required, and basic understanding of surveying equipment can be beneficial. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn help students stand out in dynamic project environments. These skills ensure effective contribution to engineering teams, accurate project execution, and valuable hands-on experience for future career growth.

What jobs do temporary civil engineer students get out of college?

Temporary civil engineer students often find entry-level positions such as civil engineering interns, project assistants, or survey assistants. These roles provide practical experience in design, construction, and site management, often requiring knowledge of CAD software and basic engineering principles.

This is an excellent opportunity for a civil engineering student to gain hands-on exposure to site layout, grading, utility design, stormwater management, permitting, construction documents, and engineering reports while working closely with experienced engineers and project managers. In this role, you will support project teams through various stages of design, from early planning and conceptual layouts through detailed design and permitting support.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Assist project engineers with the preparation of civil engineering plans for public and private land development projects.
  • Support site design tasks, including site layout, grading, stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and utility design.
  • Help prepare permit application materials, exhibits, calculations, and supporting documentation for agency review.
  • Assist with reviewing local municipal ordinances, county requirements, and state regulations applicable to assigned project tasks.
  • Contribute to engineering reports by organizing technical information and documenting project assumptions, design criteria, and regulatory requirements.
  • Work in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team environment under the guidance of experienced engineers and project managers.
  • Additional tasks may be assigned, as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Enrollment in a Civil Engineering or related engineering program, such as Environmental Engineering or Construction Engineering, at an ABET-accredited institution. Candidates should have completed or be actively pursuing coursework related to site/civil design, land development, water resources, transportation, utilities, or related civil engineering topics.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior internship, co-op, academic project, or work experience related to land development, site/civil design, stormwater management, water resources, utilities, or construction is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam Revu, and related engineering or design tools.
  • Proficiency with basic office software applications, especially Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe PDF applications.
  • Exposure to stormwater management design concepts, erosion and sediment control, grading, utility design, or Hydrology and Hydraulics (H&H) coursework is helpful.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and willingness to learn in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, ask questions, take direction, and work both independently and as part of a team.

Target Pay Range $24-$30 per hour
