Rework Solder Technician

  • This is a low-volume, high-mix, high-complexity electronics manufacturing environment focused on PCB rework and hand soldering.- Soldering is done with a high lead alloy. 935.5% lead, 5% tin, 1.5% silver. Melting at 300 degrees Celsius (572 Fahrenheit) with preheating as well.

    • Performing both through hole and surface mount soldering/rework.
  • Technicians are reworking PCBs from production operations (either hand soldering operations or SMT lines). These boards will have the defects identified and the rework steps that are required. However, technicians must verify defects against IPC and J. Std. requirements before completing repairs.- Verification of defects is done visually and on an X-ray machine.

    • X-ray machine experience is highly preferred but not a requirement.
    • Conformal coating is already removed.
  • Work includes surface mount and through-hole soldering, hand soldering, use of pre-heaters, soldering irons, hot air pencils when qualified, resistive tweezers, desolder guns, specialty tips, and general assembly tools.- Technicians must have experience with pre-heaters and desolder guns. Pre-heaters are 1-2’ in size so they are larger than the boards themselves and the workstations are only 5-6’ in size.

    • It is preferred that someone also have air pencil experience, as well.
  • Boards are complex. Technicians may work with components as small as 0201 and as large as 0603, J-leads, 100L TQFPs, jumper wires, fine-pitch components, BGAs, capacitors, resistors, high and thermal mass connectors. The are multi-layer boards ranging from approximately 5–30 layers.- Summit or Ursa BGA experience is HIGHLY preferred and if they have that, the duration of the project could last longer.

  • Common defects include tombstones, low solder fill, solder balls, solder bridges, full-fill issues, excessive solder or flux, poor cleaning, fractures, hot tears, and class 3 solder joint concerns.

  • Post-rework quality steps include visual inspection and X-ray inspection for hidden joints. Work then goes through QCI (the QC team) for review as part of the process.

  • Everything is performed under magnification, generally up to 10x depending on customer requirements.- Must be comfortable working under scope ALL day.

  • Technicians document work completed, soldering iron used, repair notes, labor, and work order tracking in a software called GSF. Basic computer skills and Excel proficiency are important.

  • Work is seated for the duration of the shift, with energy breaks available. Candidates must be comfortable working in an ESD-controlled environment.

  • NOTE: there are NO instructions on how to do the work. There are only instructions on what needs to be reworked and repaired.- Thus, this takes a high level of rework experience to be able to determine how to remove components and resolder new components.

  • Will also set temps and load boards into bake ovens for curing.

  • Other tools used include a torque driver every now and then.

  • Technicians must be coachable, communicative, flexible, reliable, and able to take feedback well. Attendance is a critical expectation.

  • **Certifications **- Tier One Preference: active certifications include J. Std. 001 (with space module) and IPC 7711/7721. Ideally, someone would also have an active IPC 610.

    • Tier Two Preference: active J. Std. 001 (with or without space module) with an inactive IPC 7711/7721.
    • Tier Three Preference: inactive J. Std. 001 (with or without space module) with an inactive IPC 7711/7721.
    • Tier Four Preference: inactive J. Std. 001 (with or without space module) and an active/inactive IPC 610 with experience doing rework soldering.- Ideally, all technicians will have Class 3 board experience, but Class 2 board experience is accepted.
  • **Onsite Training/Qualification **- Technicians soldering on boards must be certified to all five J. Std. modules plus the space addendum. Solder rework associates must also be certified to IPC 7711/7721.

    • Must pass a hand soldering qualification test on inactive product. All work must meet IPC Class 3 acceptability standards.
    • Onsite testing will soldering components to a board which will include preheater usage, taping thermal-sensitive parts with aluminum or Kapton tape, placing 0201 SMT components by hand, placing, and removing J-lead and 100L TQFPs, jumper wire placement, wire routing, specialty tips, hot air pencil, resistive tweezers, and desolder guns for plated through-hole fill technique.

Compensation / PPE / Tools / Notes

  • Pay:- Solder Tech: $36.00- This is only for those with an active J. Std. 001 and IPC 7711/7721 cert. All others will be at a $34.00/hour rate.

PPE: this is a controlled environment (ESD). ESD shoes are required for grounding; heel straps may be provided if shoes are not ESD rated. Smocks, gloves, and non-prescription safety glasses are provided. Bring prescription safety glasses if needed and the shoes (ESD rated preferred, no
