Volunteer Club Sports Coach - Women's Basketball
Job Summary
Reporting to the Club Sports Office, the Volunteer Club Sports Coach provides instruction, leadership, and mentorship to participants in the College's Women's Basketball Club Sports program. The Volunteer Coach is responsible for planning and conducting team practices, leading the team during competitions, fostering student-athlete development, supporting the student-led structure of the program, and promoting a positive, inclusive, and safe team environment.
The Volunteer Coach works collaboratively with student leaders and the Club Sports Office to support team operations and ensure compliance with College policies and applicable league regulations.
This is an unpaid volunteer position that serves the educational mission of Saint Mary's College. Appointment to this volunteer position is contingent upon successful completion of all required onboarding requirements, including a criminal background check, before any volunteer activities may begin.
Essential Responsibilities
Coaching & Player Development
  • Plan and conduct team practices two to three times per week during the competitive season.
  • Lead the team during games, scrimmages, tournaments, and other scheduled competitions.
  • Develop individual and team skills while promoting safety, sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth.
Student Leadership & Team Culture
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, respectful, and competitive team environment.
  • Serve as a mentor and positive role model for student-athletes.
  • Support the student-led structure of the Club Sports program by empowering team captains and club officers in their leadership roles.
Program Coordination
  • Coordinate with student leaders and the Club Sports Office regarding team scheduling, travel, and program operations.
  • Maintain effective communication with student leadership, Club Sports staff, and other College personnel as appropriate.
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with College policies, Club Sports procedures, league regulations, and applicable codes of conduct.
  • Perform other volunteer coaching-related duties as assigned by the Club Sports Office.

Experience and Qualifications
Education: No minimum education requirement.
Experience: Previous coaching experience or demonstrated high-level playing experience in Women's Basketball required. Experience working with college-aged students or within a collegiate or club sports environment is preferred.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the rules, techniques, and strategies of the assigned sport.
  • Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to effectively coach, mentor, and motivate student-athletes.
  • Ability to foster a positive, inclusive, respectful, and safe team environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with student leaders and College personnel.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and occasional travel as required by the team's competition schedule.

Licenses & Certifications:
CPR and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
This position is not eligible for benefits except those required by law.
