Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director- Architectural Trades & Auto Services, the Automotive/Equipment Mechanic is assigned to the Auto Shop within the Maintenance & Operations unit of the Facilities Development & Operations and works independently or as a team member under the general supervision of the Auto Shop Supervisor. The Automotive/Equipment Mechanic performs the full range of skilled journey-level automotive/heavy equipment mechanical work in the overhaul, repair, maintenance, service and adjustment of automotive, heavy maintenance, heavy construction, and other specialty equipment and engines. Incumbents typically inspect, perform diagnostic tests, determine necessary corrective action, and make minor-to-major repairs to automobiles and similar vehicles and/or maintenance and construction equipment including performance of smog and other regulatory or manufacturer recommended tests.  The incumbent uses a computerized maintenance systems to ensure the preventive maintenance program objectives are met and conducts vehicle inspections and maintains records; and may serve as a campus vehicle inspector.

The Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations provides maintenance and operations services to a University campus spread across multiple sites comprised of +150 acres, 81 buildings, and more than size million gross square feet with a fleet of over 590 automobiles or major pieces of equipment requiring maintenance. The Auto Shop is one of seven skilled trades shops within Maintenance & Operations and is comprised of a Supervising Auto/Equipment Mechanic and three Auto/Equipment Mechanics. The Shop reports up, through the Supervising Auto/Equipment Mechanic who provides supervision, oversight, and guidance.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect automotive, maintenance, construction and/or farm equipment to determine necessary corrective action
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems in vehicles and equipment
  • Make minor-to-major repairs to automobiles and similar vehicles, engines, and/or to maintenance and construction equipment
  • Fabricate, construct and/or modify equipment, mechanical, engine and body parts
  • Perform smog tests
  • Repair pump and compressor engines
  • Maintain vehicle inspection, maintenance and repair records using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems
  • Where requested or designated, serves as a campus vehicle inspector
  • Operate and maintain tools, machinery and computerized systems used in the maintenance, repair and fabrication of automotive, maintenance and/or construction equipment
  • Uses computer for communicating, researching parts and specifications, coordinating, documenting work details, and recording time log
  • Reports problems and needed repairs to supervisor to be documented and scheduled

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of wiring and electrical theory and engine principles
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems
  • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to automotive and other power-driven equipment, including applicable smog regulations
  • Must be able to make skilled repairs to applicable automotive, maintenance and/or construction equipment
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment and determine extent of repairs
  • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
  • Ability to operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled trade work
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from drawings, diagrams, and specifications to fabricate parts
  • Ability to make rough sketches and to estimate the cost, time and materials of assigned work
  • Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems, and to prepare standard reports
  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, utility cart, scissor lift, boom lift, forklift, and other equipment (as certified) to successfully complete assignments.

Required Qualifications

  • These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience as an automotive and/or equipment mechanic which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard apprenticeship program
  • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations

License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program in the automotive and/or mechanical trades
  • Five years of journey level work experience in the automotive and/or equipment mechanic trades

 

Compensation

Classification: Automotive/Equipment Mechanic
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,400/month - $6,528/month (Step 10 - Step 11)
CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month (Step 1 - Step 20)
