Job description

EXECUTIVE CREATIVE DIRECTOR, BRANDED CONTENT

Reports to: Head of Branded Content

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Vox Media is looking for an Executive Creative Director to define and drive the creative vision of our branded content practice for New York Magazine and Vox. Reporting to the Head of Branded Content, the ECD will lead a layered creative organization of video creative directors and writers, serving as a senior creative voice in the room with clients, talent, and across the business. At the core of this role is a deep fluency in video: from concept through post, this person sets the creative standard. This is a role for a leader who is equally energized by mentoring a team, pushing the work to its highest potential, and owning the work themselves.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position with an initial 6-month term, with the possibility of extension or conversion to a permanent role based on performance and business need.

Creative Vision & Leadership
  • Work with the Head of Branded content to define and evolve the creative vision for branded content across New York Magazine and its brands, with a primary focus on The Cut, as well as executive oversight of branded content on Vox, including the Explainer Studio
  • Champion a distinct, culturally attuned creative voice that reflects the editorial sensibilities of the New York Magazine brands and Vox
  • Bring particular depth and fluency to fashion and luxury work, while maintaining the range to lead compelling work across all categories and client needs
  • Drive innovation in storytelling formats, executional approaches, and content models; bring outside-in thinking and a sharp point of view on where branded content is headed and where you want to take it
  • Stay deeply immersed in culture, brand, and category trends, actively translating those insights into creative direction for the team
  • Remain meaningfully hands-on across all levels of the work, from large and complex campaigns to the everyday creative output
  • Partner with Marketing & Creative Strategy and Brand Marketing Strategy teams to consult and ideate on the production and development of branded content across multiple formats
  • Clearly and persuasively articulate a creative vision that honors the New York Magazine and Vox brands while delivering meaningful impact for clients and agency partners
  • Cultivate and grow Vox Media's network of creative collaborators: directors, DPs, writers, animators, and video editors
Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead and develop a layered creative organization: directly oversee a team of creative directors and writers working across New York Magazine and Vox
  • Build a creative culture of craft, accountability, and curiosity, where ambition is the norm
  • Model the behaviors you expect: a commitment to the work, a generosity with your thinking, and a genuine investment in the people around you
Writing & Content
  • Provide executive oversight of the team’s writing output to ensure creative voice, quality, and brand alignment across all written deliverables
  • Set the standard for client-facing creative materials: treatments, decks, scripts, and campaign narratives
  • Concept and write across all levels of the work, from day-to-day deliverables to the highest-stakes projects
  • Bring a deeply developed visual sensibility and elevated aesthetic to all creative output, ensuring that art direction, design, and visual storytelling are held to the same standard as the writing and video work
  • Partner closely with art and design to ensure that every client-facing deliverable reflects a cohesive, intentional, and visually elevated point of view
Production & Post
  • Partner closely with the Director of Production to continuously evolve how we work, building best practices across pre and post-production that balance creative excellence with the realities of schedule and budget at every level of the process
  • Provide on-set creative guidance across productions at all levels, and direct projects when appropriate
  • Review edits and provide clear, actionable post-production notes, ensuring creative integrity is maintained through every state of post
WHO YOU ARE
  • 10+ years of creative experience, with significant time leading at the Creative Director level and a proven track record of managing layered creative teams, including other senior creative leaders
  • A video-first creative leader: you have a commanding background in video from concept through post, you speak the language of production fluently, and you've directed work you're proud of
  • Deep expertise in fashion, luxury, and/or beauty categories; a sophisticated understanding of how brands in these spaces think about storytelling and cultural positioning, with the range to lead strong work across all categories
  • Experience leading writers as well as visual/video creatives; you understand what great writing for branded content looks like and how to cultivate it
  • A natural mentor and culture-builder who can inspire and develop talent at every level—people want to work for you because you invest in them, push them, and strive to make the work better
  • Proven ability to inspire and develop creative organizations at every level, from emerging creatives to senior leaders
  • A visual thinker with a deeply developed aesthetic and high visual taste—you have as strong a point of view on art direction and design as you do on writing and video, with a sharp instinct for brand voice, platform context, and cultural relevance
  • A collaborative approach to leadership—you build bridges across client services, production, post, and editorial teams
  • Comfortable operating at pace and at scale, balancing long-term creative vision with short-term execution demands
  • Equally at home in a strategic conversation and in the work itself—you don't just oversee, you create
