What is a temporary Amazon Relay owner operator?

A Temporary Amazon Relay Owner Operator is an independent truck driver or small fleet owner who contracts with Amazon to transport freight for a limited period, often to meet seasonal or short-term demand. These operators use their own vehicles to haul loads assigned through the Amazon Relay platform, which connects carriers with available Amazon shipments. Temporary roles may last for a few weeks or months, depending on business needs, and provide flexibility for operators who prefer not to commit to long-term contracts. This position is ideal for those seeking extra income or looking to fill gaps in their existing schedules.

What are some common challenges faced by temporary Amazon Relay owner operators, and how can they prepare for them?

Temporary Amazon Relay Owner Operators often encounter challenges such as fluctuating freight demand, tight delivery schedules, and navigating Amazon's strict compliance standards. Adapting to route changes and managing downtime between loads can also be demanding. To prepare, it's essential to maintain a reliable vehicle, stay updated on Amazon's safety requirements, and be proactive in communication with dispatchers. Building flexibility into your schedule and budgeting for potential gaps in assignments can help ensure success in this dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary Amazon Relay owner operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Amazon Relay Owner Operator, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), a clean driving record, and experience with freight delivery or logistics. Equal parts advisor and operating partner, Amazon’s team of Business Coaches assist and guide our Delivery Service Partner (DSP) business owners as they build and grow successful last mile package delivery businesses.

The Senior Business Coach (BC) helps Amazon improve the flexibility and quality of its delivery network in the Americas—to help fuel a $4B investment in rural communities bringing even faster delivery to our millions of customers in less densely populated areas. This role’s primary focus is supporting DSP operations across the broader Americas delivery network, with particular emphasis on rural market expansion and mature-state optimization. Specifically, BCs support DSPs in making business decisions that enable them to build healthy, sustainable businesses. As trusted advisors, Business Coaches work alongside DSPs, supporting business planning and strategy and helping owners address business and operational challenges.

What You’ll Do

As Senior Business Coach (BC), you will manage a portfolio of Delivery Service Partner (DSP) owners within the Amazon delivery network. With the evolution of delivery modes and rural expansion planned for 2026, and continued strategic expansion into 2027, this role is integral to our program’s evolution. Sr. BCs provide strategic guidance to DSP owners throughout their business life‑cycle of their relationship with Amazon—from pre‑launch preparation through mature‑state optimization. You will facilitate solution‑oriented approaches to remove business obstacles and drive continuous improvement in financial performance, operational efficiency, and safety standards across the network. The position requires extensive collaboration with cross‑functional stakeholders, including operations managers, program directors, compliance officers, legal counsel, and finance teams. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical capabilities, strategic problem‑solving skills, and the ability to implement data‑driven recommendations that create meaningful change both internally and externally.

Key job responsibilities Operational Excellence & Financial Advisory
  • Lead DSP owners through critical business phases including launch, operational scaling, and seasonal demand optimization
  • Provide comprehensive consultation on financial management and operational optimization
  • Support development of scalable business processes to ensure consistent performance metrics
  • Navigate program evolution by helping owners implement and adapt to strategic changes within traditional DSP operations, including new service types and offerings such as rural delivery expansion and delivery capabilities
  • Conduct data-driven business reviews, delivering performance insights and competitive benchmarking analysis
Business Development & Program Management
  • Evaluate and interview potential candidates for the DSP program, ensuring alignment with program standards and objectives
  • Guide strategic planning and execution of network capacity management
Stakeholder Engagement & Program Enhancement
  • Foster strong DSP community engagement through coordination of local events and regional initiatives
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with regional stakeholders
  • Identify operational inefficiencies and champion process improvements across the network
  • Design and implement solutions to enhance overall program effectiveness and DSP owner experience

The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor and primary account manager, combining strategic insight with practical business acumen to drive sustainable growth and operational excellence across the DSP network.

A day in the life Strategic Leadership & Decision Making
  • Drive both strategic initiatives and tactical execution to achieve business objectives
  • Leverage industry expertise to establish priorities, optimize account management strategies, and develop sustainable long‑term solutions
  • Navigate ambiguous business environments to formulate clear strategic direction and influence cross‑functional priorities
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in solution design, balancing complexity with efficiency
Stakeholder Management & Communication
  • Lead resolution of complex business challenges through detailed analysis and effective escalation management
  • Foster collaborative relationships across multiple business units and organizational levels
  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with key stakeholders through exceptional relationship management
  • Deliver compelling verbal and written communications, including executive‑level presentations and strategic recommendations
Location & Travel Requirements
  • Position is headquartered at our Chicago Hub
  • Work arrangement includes structured mix of office presence, field travel, and remote work days. One week per month is dedicated to in‑office collaboration at respective/team’s Hub. Significant field engagement is required: minimum 3 days per week of travel for 3 weeks monthly to support portfolio of Delivery Service Partners
  • Must be comfortable with regular travel and maintaining a flexible schedule

The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional problem‑solving capabilities, strong business acumen, and the ability to influence outcomes in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment.
