Description of Job
The Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) is accepting applications for a Temporary 1:1 State Teacher Aide assigned to the School for the Blind.
This position is assigned to work with one student with additional disabilities and provides individualized support in the classroom and other learning environments based upon the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Under the direction of teaching staff, the 1:1 State Teacher Aide supports the student's educational program, participation, safety, independence, and access to the school environment.
Responsibilities include:
  • Provide daily 1:1 support to the assigned student in the classroom and other learning environments.
  • Assist teaching staff with implementation of lesson plans, instructional activities, effective teaching strategies, and instructional materials.
  • Provide individualized assistance consistent with the student's IEP goals and objectives.
  • Support and reinforce appropriate student behavior and implement behavior strategies in consultation with teachers and mental health staff, as appropriate.
  • Work with a student who may demonstrate aggressive or non-compliant behavior while maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Support the student with daily routines and activities.
  • Complete classroom, behavioral, and other student-related documentation or data collection as assigned.
  • Assist the student with transitions throughout campus, including arrival and dismissal, parent drop-off/pick-up, and transportation areas.
  • Assist with toileting and other personal care needs, as required.
  • Assist with feeding, as required.
  • Participate in school, department, and student team meetings.
  • Participate in required professional development and training.
  • Perform other duties necessary to support the assigned student's educational program and IEP.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful experience working with children or youth.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with children or youth who are Blind/Visually Impaired.
  • Experience working with students with additional disabilities or special needs.
  • Experience working in an educational, classroom, residential, behavioral, or similar student-support environment.

Conditions of Employment
Applicants must be willing and able to:
  • Work with children who may have emotional or behavioral challenges and who may pose a physical threat, with appropriate training provided.
  • Perform medium physical work, including exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move persons or objects.
  • Lift and/or assist in transferring a student weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Walk and/or stand for approximately 6-8 hours during a work shift.
  • Possess a current, valid State of Colorado Driver's License if assigned to transport students.
  • Successfully complete Colorado Department of Education transportation/driver training requirements if assigned to transport students.
  • Successfully complete required background checks, including Colorado and federal criminal history checks, employment verification, and professional/personal reference checks.
  • Comply with CSDB's Drug-Free Workplace Policy and other applicable CSDB policies.
  • Participate in direct deposit of pay.

Terms of Employment
This is a temporary, full-time position assigned to support an individual student during the school year.
The selected candidate will be compensated at $21.00 per hour, not to exceed 40 hours per week.
The position is dependent upon the continued need for 1:1 support for the assigned student and associated funding.
As a temporary employee, the employee will pay applicable state, federal, and local taxes and Medicare tax and will contribute to the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). Workers' Compensation coverage is provided.
Temporary employees are not eligible for health, dental, or life insurance benefits and do not receive annual or holiday pay.
