Job description

This role is a temporary position for students to provide intraoperative care to selected patients by functioning as the scrub person assisting the surgical team during an operative procedure. Assists other perioperative team members in the care of the surgical patient.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Currently enrolled in a Surgical Tech program
2. High school diploma or equivalent
3. BLS certification within 30 days of hire
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
1. Prior patient care experience.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Performs the scrub role during selectively assigned surgical procedures in the OR.
2. Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR.
3. Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.
4. Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established policies. Uses counting technology.
5. Assists by gowning and gloving surgeons; positions equipment and instruments.
6. Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.
7. Operates specialty equipment after receiving specific training.
8. Assists with transportation and positioning of OR patients.
9. Performs designated procedures as needed following departmental policies/procedures/practice guidelines.
10. Processes supplies, instruments, and equipment used in patient care by preparing supplies/equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards.
11. Assists with sterilization by cleaning used instruments during case and at case conclusion. Loads case cart post procedure.
12. Assists with maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
13. As assigned, assists with inventory restocking. Restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment.
14. Cleans and prepares work environment including the return of equipment to designated storage locations.
15. Removes out of date items. Discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.
16. Documents appropriately to foster the work of the department by assisting with clerical work and record keeping duties.
17. Provides input to the proper recording of patient charges.
18. Assists with the transportation of case carts and specialty carts. Assists with maintenance of hallway egress.
19. Participates in post case cleaning processes.
20. Accounts for all sharps used on sterile field. Disposes hazardous materials per departmental policies/procedures.

1. Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
2. Ability to lift up to 40-pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts up to 200 lbs
3. Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
4. Ability to wear personal protective equipment and lead for extended periods of time.
