What is a temp proprietary trading desk?

A Temp Proprietary Trading Desk is a temporary or contract-based position within a financial firm where traders use the company's own capital to execute trades, aiming to generate direct profits for the firm rather than on behalf of clients. These desks are often staffed with traders who analyze markets, develop strategies, and manage risk over a fixed period, such as during market volatility or when additional trading coverage is needed. The temporary aspect means the role is not permanent and may be project-based or to cover a specific business need.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temp proprietary trading desk professional?

To thrive on a Temp Proprietary Trading Desk, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of financial markets, and a background in finance, mathematics, or a related field. Proficiency with trading platforms, market analytics software, and familiarity with risk management systems is typically required. Quick decision-making, resilience under pressure, and effective communication help individuals excel in this high-stakes environment. These skills are crucial for making profitable trades, managing risk, and adapting to rapidly changing market conditions.

What are some typical challenges faced on a temp proprietary trading desk, and how can new hires prepare for them?

To succeed, it's helpful to arrive with strong analytical skills, a solid grasp of market fundamentals, and the ability to communicate clearly under pressure. Proactively seeking feedback and staying updated on market trends can also help temp traders make a positive impact during their assignment.

About Us:Founded 20 years ago and headquartered in Chicago, the DV Group of financial services firms has grown to more than 600 people operating throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Since spinning out of a large brokerage firm in 2016, DV Trading has rapidly scaled as an independent proprietary trading firm utilizing its own capital, trading strategies, and risk management methodologies to provide liquidity to worldwide financial markets and hedging opportunities to commodity producers and users. Requirements:
  • At least 1 year of experience on a professional relative value trading desk
  • A track record of trading profitable RV strategies in a professional setting
  • Strong preference for experience using factor models in correlated products

Why DV Trading:
  • Trade with firm capital
