ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following. Other job-related duties may be assigned:

• Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
• Includes general rough carpentry and trim carpentry skills necessary to install wood and steel stud framing for walls and ceilings, millwork installation, doors and hardware installation, drywall, wood blocking, paneling, trim accessories, temporary protection and enclosures.
• Selects specified type of lumber or other materials, coordinates material deliveries and distribution.
• Prepares and performs layout for work.
• Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials.
• Shapes materials to prescribed measurements.
• Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, screws, or glue.
• Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter's level.
• Erects framework for structures and lays subflooring.
• Builds stairs and lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work.
• Covers subfloor with building paper to keep out moisture and lays hardwood, parquet, and wood-strip-block floors by nailing floors to subfloor or cementing them to mastic or asphalt base.
• Applies shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
• Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates.
• Constructs forming systems, bracing, and framing related to pouring concrete.
• Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
• Welds metal parts to steel structural members.
• Required to work at various heights using ladders, scaffolding and other equipment, such as aerial lifts and scissor lifts.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School graduate or GED equivalent. Completion of Carpenter Apprenticeship or equal experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
