     JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Temporary Class A Driver                                                                                  Classification: Temporary Full-Time/ Non-Exempt

Reports to: Director of Transportation                                                                               Location: Plaza (Visalia, CA)

Supports: Customer Service Dept, Warehouse Dept, Inland Star                                    Schedule: Generally 30-40+ hours per week,

and DIR Transportation Customers                                                                                    based on business and operational needs. 

TEMPORARY FULL-TIME POSITION - UP TO 6 MONTHS

This is a temporary, full-time position expected to last up to six (6) months. Work schedules and hours may vary based on business needs and available workload, with overtime required as needed. The assignment may end earlier based on business needs.

Benefits: Eligible for Paid Time Off (PTO) and Paid Sick Leave (PSL) in accordance with Company policy. Company-sponsored health insurance is not offered for this position.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of Director of Transportation, the Temporary Class A Driver is responsible for the safe and timely delivery of product to our customers designated destination and return back to warehouse.

Essential Functions:
  • Must understand and comply with all DMV regulations and have a valid California Commercial Driver License with hazardous endorsement.
  • Be courteous/professional with customers and always keep a clean and neat appearance.
  • Must understand and comply with all policies and procedures as outlined in the DIR Transportation employee handbook.
  • Maintain truck/trailer (vehicle) cleanliness inside and out.
  • Understand Transportation (D.O.T.) Laws of California and agree not to violate any of the laws.
  • Learn how to operate a forklift and pass a test so as to assist loading and unloading of equipment and/or products with an electric pallet jack or manual jack.
  • Unload delivery product and load pick up product at the specific location as necessary utilizing the equipment provided.
  • Clearly communicates the needs of the customer so as to insure customer service excellence.
  • Performs all work assigned by supervisor in an orderly/timely fashion.
  • Must study and understand Emergency Response Guidebook.
  • Must work in a safe manner and comply with all safety procedures/rules in place at Inland Star distribution centers and DIR Transportation.
  • Must turn in all paperwork, including logs, equipment inspections, time records and delivery receipts at the end of each working day.
  • Must attend all safety meetings and agree to learn and understand any or all new procedures.
 
  • Inspect all equipment before each shift to make sure that there are no defaults in the equipment.
  • Inspect all loads before leaving and bracing the product so as to avoid causing damage.
  • Be willing to accept improvement and be involved in all new safety projects. Understand the importance of keeping current on all regulations.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education & Qualifications/ Requirements:
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required / Some college preferred.
  • Must be at least 23 years of age with 2 years verifiable commercial driving experience. 5 years verifiable commercial driving experience preferred.
  • Driving school certification preferred.
  • Valid California Commercial Drivers license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
  • Honesty, trustworthy, and open-mindedness.
  • Must perform job tasks to meet or exceed customer key performance indicators and the minimum standards established by the customer and ISDC and DIR Transportation leadership team.
  • Demonstrate initiative in developing your job skills.
  • Willingness to participate as a team member with selfless attitude.
  • Proper endorsements to handle all product being delivered i.e., hazardous, truck/trailer, doubles.
  • Understand and pass all D.O.T. requirements.
  • Ability to drive under different weather conditions.
  • Able to back up from blind side as well as from regular positions.
  • Able to secure and transport products.
  • Knowledge of diesel engines and functions.
  • Understand coupling and uncoupling of equipment.
  • Experience with all required documentation.
  • Extensive knowledge of delivery areas/cities within the state of California.
  • Familiarity with GPS devices.
