What is a temp computer aided design?

Temp Computer Aided Design (CAD) jobs are temporary positions where professionals use software to create technical drawings, models, or plans for a variety of industries such as architecture, engineering, or manufacturing. These roles typically involve assisting with design projects for a set period, often to cover increased workload or specific projects. Temp CAD professionals must be proficient in CAD software and able to quickly adapt to different team workflows and project requirements. Such positions can be a great way to gain experience, build a portfolio, and network within the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temp computer aided design professional?

To thrive as a Temp Computer Aided Design professional, you need proficiency in drafting, technical drawing, and a solid understanding of engineering or architectural principles, typically supported by relevant coursework or an associate degree. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit is essential, and certifications in these tools can be advantageous. Attention to detail, effective time management, and the ability to communicate technical information clearly are crucial soft skills. These capabilities ensure accurate and timely design deliverables, seamless collaboration with project teams, and successful adaptation to short-term assignments.

What are some common challenges faced by temp computer aided design professionals, and how can they be managed?

Temp CAD professionals often encounter the challenge of quickly adapting to new project requirements and unfamiliar company standards. They may need to learn different CAD software versions or workflows in a short timeframe, while collaborating with permanent team members who have established routines. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to communicate proactively with supervisors, seek clarification on project expectations early, and leverage any onboarding resources provided. Staying organized and being flexible can also help temp CAD professionals integrate smoothly and contribute effectively to diverse teams.

Job description

CAD Drafter
Location: Portsmouth, NH
Employment Type: Contract
Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday
Bring Engineering Designs to Life
Galvion is looking for an experienced CAD Drafter to join our Advanced Development Engineering team in Portsmouth, NH.
This is a hands-on opportunity for a detail-oriented drafting professional who can turn engineering concepts, 3D CAD models, and design markups into accurate, production-ready documentation.
You'll work closely with Mechanical and Electrical Engineers to create the drawings and documentation that enable innovative products to move from engineering design into manufacturing and assembly.
What You'll Do
  • Create detailed 2D mechanical manufacturing, fabrication, and assembly drawings from 3D CAD models.
  • Develop 2D electrical interconnect documentation, including cable assemblies, wire harnesses, point-to-point wiring, and system/sub-system wiring diagrams.
  • Apply dimensions, GD&T, wire specifications, pinouts, surface finishes, title blocks, and BOMs in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and company standards.
  • Prepare clear documentation for manufacturing, assembly, inspection, and engineering review.
  • Process ECOs and ECNs and maintain accurate drawing revisions.
  • Work directly with Mechanical and Electrical Engineers to interpret markups, clarify tolerances, verify wiring and pinout intent, and resolve drawing discrepancies.
  • Maintain organized CAD libraries, cable and connector symbol libraries, and engineering documentation within PDM/PLM systems.
  • Help maintain consistent drafting standards, templates, revision practices, and document-control processes.
  • Identify documentation issues that could impact manufacturing, assembly, inspection, or product performance.

What You Bring
  • Associate degree in CADD, Drafting Technology, or equivalent technical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional drafting experience, including mechanical manufacturing drawings and 2D cable/wiring harness documentation.
  • Experience with 2D/3D CAD software, such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Working knowledge of PDM/PLM systems and engineering document control.
  • Strong understanding of ASME Y14.5 and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620 and wire harness/cable assembly documentation.
  • Knowledge of connector callouts, pinouts, wire specifications, and BOM creation.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, manufacturing-ready documentation.

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Arena PLM.
  • Experience with Altium or similar electronics design-capture software.
  • Experience supporting products that combine mechanical assemblies, electronics, cables, and wiring.
  • Experience working in an engineering, manufacturing, or advanced product development environment.

Why This Role Matters
As a CAD Drafter at Galvion, you'll play an important role in transforming engineering concepts into clear, accurate, and buildable product documentation.
Your work will directly support Mechanical and Electrical Engineers while helping manufacturing and assembly teams understand exactly how products are intended to be built.
If you enjoy solving technical documentation challenges, working closely with engineers, and taking ownership of high-quality CAD deliverables, we'd like to hear from you.
Work Environment
  • On-site in Portsmouth, NH.
  • Collaborative engineering environment with regular interaction with Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Travel between Galvion facilities and occasional customer travel may be required, including potential international travel.
