What is a telecom automation test engineer?

Telecom Automation Test Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and execute automated tests for telecommunications systems and software. They work to ensure that telecom products and networks function correctly, efficiently, and securely by automating repetitive testing processes. Their responsibilities often include creating test scripts, using automation tools, analyzing test results, and collaborating with development teams to resolve issues. This role helps improve the quality and reliability of telecom products while reducing manual testing efforts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a telecom automation test engineer?

To thrive as a Telecom Automation Test Engineer, you need a strong background in telecommunications concepts, software testing methodologies, and a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with automation tools such as Selenium, Appium, and scripting languages like Python or Java, as well as knowledge of telecom protocols (e.g., SIP, LTE), is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality telecom products by enabling efficient test automation, rapid bug detection, and seamless team collaboration.

What are some common challenges faced by a telecom automation test engineer and how can they be managed effectively?

One common challenge for Telecom Automation Test Engineers is ensuring that automated test scripts remain compatible with rapidly changing telecom technologies and protocols. Updates to network infrastructure or software can require frequent adjustments and maintenance of test scripts. Effective communication with development and network teams helps anticipate changes early, and adopting modular, reusable script frameworks can streamline script updates. Staying current with emerging telecom standards and participating in regular team syncs can further help manage these challenges efficiently.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Automation Test Engineer (Quality Engineering)
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Automation Test Engineer to lead quality engineering initiatives for critical enterprise financial and inventory management applications. In this role, you will design detailed feature files, build robust automated test suites, validate backend database logic, and ensure flawless execution across cloud environments.
This is a comprehensive quality engineering role where you will bridge manual and automated testing, participate in story refinement, manage defects through their lifecycle, and champion quality standards. Utilizing modern automation frameworks and cloud infrastructure, you will safeguard the reliability and performance of core transaction workflows. If you have a strong background in test automation and complex data validation, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Test Design & Feature Engineering
• Scenario Design: Design detailed test scenarios and Gherkin feature files for both manual and automated execution, participating actively in story refinement and backlog grooming.
• Requirements Analysis: Analyze functional specifications to translate business requirements into robust test plans, data requirements, and automated scripts.
Automated Test Development
• Framework Maintenance: Develop and maintain step definitions and automated tests using Cucumber paired with modern frameworks (Cypress, Playwright, or Selenium).
• Component Testing: Implement test automation covering UI, service, and business logic components, ensuring reliable execution across multi-browser and cloud environments.
• API & Scripting: Leverage programming languages (TypeScript, Java) and API testing tools (RestAssured, Postman) to build comprehensive test coverage.
Database Validation & Defect Management
• Backend Verification: Utilize advanced SQL queries to validate backend logic, data transformations, and multi-table relationships across Oracle and PostgreSQL environments.
• Defect Lifecycle: Perform functional, regression, and integration testing; document and track defects clearly with supporting evidence using ALM and Jira.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience Baseline: 5+ years of professional software testing experience in enterprise application environments.
• Technical Mastery:
oProven, practical experience creating automated tests using Cucumber Gherkin combined with Cypress, Playwright, or Selenium.
oProficient in development and automation languages: TypeScript, Java, and SQL.
oStrong proficiency in writing and interpreting complex SQL queries for cloud-based and relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL).
oExperience with test management tools (OpenText ALM, Jira, or Jira X-Ray) and API testing utilities (Postman, RestAssured).
• Core Competencies: Comprehensive background in functional, regression, and integration testing; strong analytical problem-solving skills; and the ability to work independently within fast-paced sprint cycles.
Preferred Attributes
• Experience testing high-volume financial domain or inventory management applications.
• Hands-on validation experience in AWS cloud environments (including familiarity with cloud infrastructure testing and CI/CD DevOps pipelines).
• Exposure to AI-assisted development or testing tools to optimize test script creation.
