Registered Nurse (RN) - Transplant Med/Surg (Abdominal Unit 8C) | Travel/Contract


Location: Milwaukee
Facility Type: Level III Trauma Center | Level III NICU | Magnet Facility | Comprehensive Stroke Center


Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Med/Surg Registered Nurse (RN) to join a specialized Transplant Unit (Abdominal 8C) caring for liver and kidney transplant patients. This is a high-acuity unit requiring strong clinical judgment, time management, and post-surgical care experience.


Patient Population
  • Adult Medical-Surgical patients

  • Liver and kidney transplant patients

  • Post-operative and complex medical cases


Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive Med/Surg nursing care

  • Perform thorough patient assessments and care planning

  • Manage:

    • Tube feedings and NG tubes

    • Blood product administration

  • Ensure accurate documentation and adherence to pain management protocols

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams for optimal patient outcomes


Requirements
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years RN Med/Surg experience (REQUIRED)

  • Traveler Experience: First-time travelers considered upon review

  • Certifications:

    • BLS (Required)

  • Skills:

    • Strong post-surgical care experience

    • Critical thinking and time management

    • Comfort with complex patient care

  • Hospital Beds: 933

  • Unit Beds: 26

  • Patient Ratios:

    • Days: 1:3-6

    • Nights: 1:5-7


Technology & Equipment
  • EMR: Epic

  • IV Pumps: Alaris

  • Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

  • Monitoring: GE monitors


Support & Work Environment
  • Charge Nurse (no patient assignment; supports unit and PD cases)

  • Unit Secretary (rotating)

  • Hospitalist (24/7)

  • Respiratory Therapy (24/7)

  • Phlebotomy services

  • Centralized telemetry monitoring with tele tech


Floating
  • Required to float to:

    • Other Med/Surg units

    • ED Holding (1:4 ratio)

  • Travelers float first


Orientation
  • Minimum 1 shift orientation


Schedule
  • Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend

  • On-Call: None

  • RTO: Up to 7 days allowed

  • Fatigue Policy:

    • Max 60 hours/week

    • No more than 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts


Important Clinical Note
  • Strict adherence to pain management protocols:

    • Pain must be documented before and after medication administration

    • Medication must match pain score range (e.g., cannot give mild pain meds for severe pain without provider order)
