What is a teen vet?

A teen vet generally refers to a teenager who volunteers or works in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or similar environment, assisting veterinarians and staff. These roles allow teens to gain hands-on experience with animals, learn about animal care, and explore a potential career in veterinary medicine. Although they are not licensed veterinarians, teen vets often help with tasks such as cleaning, feeding, and handling animals under supervision. This experience can be valuable for those considering veterinary school in the future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a veterinary assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Veterinary Assistant, you need a basic knowledge of animal care, strong observational skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent—though additional certification is often preferred. Familiarity with veterinary software, animal restraint techniques, and medical equipment is commonly required. Compassion, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you support veterinarians and comfort pet owners. These abilities ensure effective animal care, smooth clinic operations, and a positive experience for clients and their pets.

What types of hands-on experiences or learning opportunities are typically available for teens interested in veterinary careers?

Teens interested in veterinary careers often have opportunities to gain hands-on experience through volunteering at animal shelters, shadowing veterinarians, or participating in internship and mentorship programs. Many veterinary clinics and animal hospitals welcome responsible teens to assist with basic animal care, administrative tasks, or observation. These experiences not only help teens build foundational knowledge and skills but also provide valuable insight into the daily responsibilities and challenges of veterinary work, which can strengthen future college applications and career prospects.

Job description

Overview

Full-Time Family Assistant in Beverly Hills, CA Schedule: Monday through Friday, roughly 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM (with the occasional later evening) Start Date: August (or sooner for the right candidate) Compensation: $50+ per hour, depending on experience, plus full benefits

The Short Version A warm, energetic Beverly Hills family (and our repeat client) is looking for a full-time Family Assistant who is equal parts trusted right hand and favorite camp counselor. This role has two sides that matter equally. On one hand, you are mom's go-to: the person she can delegate to and trust to get things done, from errands and groceries to organizing a closet. On the other hand, you are an active, hands-on presence for the kids, the kind of person who jumps out of the car to shoot hoops or grabs an after-school matcha and a laugh. They want a Tigger, not an Eeyore. If you love staying busy, being resourceful, and being genuinely involved, keep reading.

The Family This is a kind, fun, close-knit family with two great kids, ages 11 and 15. There is a lot of love and humor in this house, and they treat the people who work with them with real warmth and respect. There is also a low-maintenance family dog who is happy with a yard, the occasional vet run, and being fed on time.

What You'll Do Your days will be a genuine mix, which is part of the fun. Mornings start with a quick sync with mom to map out the plan, followed by school drop-off and getting the kids on their way.

A meaningful part of this role is being the person mom can hand things off to with confidence. You'll run errands like groceries and dry cleaning, manage shipments and returns, help with gifting and projects, keep things organized around the house (think closets and clearing out expired items in the medicine cabinet), and generally keep the day-to-day running smoothly. You'll partner closely with mom, sometimes taking her lead and sometimes simply asking, "What do you need today?" A curious, proactive mindset is everything here.

The other half of the role is active engagement with the kids. You'll be a true mentor and willing accomplice: playing basketball, getting outside, feeding snacks, and being a reliable, fun presence they look forward to seeing. There will be some weeknight or weekend babysitting, and occasional overnight coverage when the parents travel, with plenty of local family support on hand during those stretches.

Key ResponsibilitiesTransportation & Logistics

  • Execute daily morning school drop-off and afternoon pickup of mostly 1 child.
  • Provide transportation to sports practices, games, and extracurricular activities as needed.

Household Management & Personal Assisting

  • Grocery shop, run errands, and source household essentials.
  • Manage outgoing shipments, including handling returns and gift-wrapping.
  • Buy gifts and help manage projects that include gifts.

Active Youth Engagement

  • Act as an active mentor rather than just a supervisor.
  • Participate in sports with the children, including playing basketball, throwing a baseball, playing in the pool and  going for bike rides.
  • Assist with snack preparation and school lunch planning as needed.
  • Provide some weeknight or weekend babysitting.
  • Provide some overnight coverage when parents are traveling.

Light Pet Care

  • Feed the dog when needed.
  • Let the dog out as needed.
  • Take the dog to appointments when needed.

Travel

  • In the summer, continue responsibilities in Jackson Hole or on Nantucket as needed.

Who We're Looking For The ideal candidate is legally authorized to work in the US, local to Los Angeles or has strong ties to the area and knows how to navigate a big city with ease. You are physically fit and genuinely enjoy being active and outdoors. You bring demonstrated experience (a minimum of 3+ years of experience) working with older kids and teens as a Nanny | Family Assistant, someone who can keep up with an active pre-teen and still be a cool, trusted presence for a teenager. A clean driving record and valid license are non-negotiable, along with strong discretion and professionalism in a private home.

This family has a wonderful track record of long, happy tenures with the people who work for them, and they are looking for the right fit to grow with them for years to come. Sounds pretty fantastic, right? We think so too.
