What is a technology risk manager?

Technology Risk Managers are professionals responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with information technology systems and processes within an organization. They ensure that IT operations comply with regulations and best practices while safeguarding data and technology assets from threats such as cyberattacks, data breaches, and system failures. Their work involves developing risk management strategies, conducting risk assessments, and collaborating with other departments to ensure the organization's technology infrastructure is secure and resilient.

What are some common challenges technology risk managers face when working across different departments?

Technology Risk Managers often encounter challenges in aligning risk management strategies with the priorities of various business units. Departments may have differing levels of risk tolerance, technical understanding, and resource availability, which can make establishing consistent policies and controls difficult. Success in the role relies on strong communication and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to educate stakeholders about the importance of risk mitigation while balancing business objectives. Building collaborative relationships and maintaining flexibility are key to overcoming these cross-departmental challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technology risk manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technology Risk Manager, you need expertise in risk assessment, cybersecurity principles, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a degree in information security or related fields. Familiarity with risk management frameworks (such as NIST or ISO 27001), GRC (governance, risk, and compliance) tools, and certifications like CISM or CISSP are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and stakeholder management skills help you translate technical risks into business terms and coordinate mitigation efforts. These abilities are critical to proactively identifying threats and ensuring organizational resilience against evolving technology risks.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Our Trading and Risk technology estate is entering a multi-year period of structural change. We are modernising our infrastructure, moving core systems to the public cloud, and re-platforming the applications that produce the firm's positions, P&L and risk - all while those systems continue to run in full production every day. In parallel, we are replacing a core book-of-record accounting capability and re-wiring how Risk consumes that data.

We are seeking a senior Program Manager to own delivery across these two interlocking programs: a hands‑on, outcome‑oriented leader who has run large cross‑functional transformation in a trading and risk context, is comfortable at the intersection of infrastructure, application engineering and the business, and can pull disparate teams toward hard, time‑boxed goals.

Cloud Transition (Trading & Risk): The Program Manager will drive two tightly‑coupled challenges as our applications move to the cloud. First, materially reducing our legacy on‑premise database footprint - both hardware and, above all, the volume of stored data - by coordinating the application‑team cleanup, rationalisation and data‑tiering effort that infrastructure teams cannot deliver alone. Second, managing the performance implications of a hybrid operating model, where applications move to the cloud ahead of certain data stores: the PM will lead the program to get application teams to profile and optimise their data interactions so they remain performant through the transition, against a backdrop of continuous production use and no tolerance for service degradation.

Book-of-Record Replacement & Risk Integration: Over a multi‑year horizon the firm is replacing a core accounting book-of-record capability and standing up new position and accounting services, while retiring legacy tooling. The Program Manager will ensure our Risk systems integrate cleanly with the new platform and transition off the incumbent solutions as the source of intraday and end‑of‑day positions and P&L; coordinate against the provider's technology roadmap and its regulatory milestones; and manage the sequencing and reconciliation risk of running this replacement in parallel with related front‑ and middle‑office tooling changes. A firmwide middle‑office modernisation effort will be driving this forward; this role provides the delivery leadership from the Risk & Reporting side to keep the two in lockstep.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Own end‑to‑end program planning, roadmap and execution across both workstreams - scope, milestones, dependencies, RAID and governance reporting to senior stakeholders. Drive delivery teams to concrete, measurable outcomes and hold delivery lines accountable to firm deadlines. Partner across infrastructure, application engineering, operations technology and external technology providers. Establish the instrumentation and evidence base needed to diagnose issues on data rather than anecdote, and manage program financials and cloud‑commitment implications.

REQUIREMENTS
  • 12+ years leading large, complex technology transformation programs in financial services, ideally in a trading, risk or investment‑management context
  • Demonstrated success combining cloud/infrastructure migration with application re‑engineering under live production constraints
  • Hands‑on experience with public-cloud migration at scale, including the operational and performance trade‑offs of a hybrid estate
  • Strong grounding in front‑to‑back trading/risk or investment‑accounting systems (positions, P&L, book-of-record integration)
  • Proven ability to lead delivery across organizational boundaries and drive teams that do not report to them
  • Excellent stakeholder management up to C‑suite; clear, evidence‑based communication
  • Formal program/project management credentials (PMP; SAFe/Agile)
Preferred
  • Regulatory‑driven transformation experience (e.g. settlement or capital‑related mandates)
  • Experience with large‑scale data‑store modernisation and migration
  • Risk/finance qualifications (FRM, CFA) a plus
