Technical Support Engineer Level 3 information

What does a Technical Support Engineer Level 3 do?

A Technical Support Engineer Level 3 is a senior specialist who handles the most complex and challenging technical issues that cannot be resolved by lower-level support teams. They troubleshoot advanced technical problems, perform root cause analysis, and often work directly with product development or engineering teams to resolve critical issues. Their responsibilities may also include mentoring junior support staff, creating technical documentation, and ensuring long-term solutions for recurring problems. Level 3 engineers typically have deep expertise in their technology domain and play a key role in maintaining customer satisfaction and system reliability.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Technical Support Engineer Level 3?

To thrive as a Technical Support Engineer Level 3, you need advanced troubleshooting abilities, in-depth knowledge of operating systems and networks, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ticketing systems, remote diagnostic tools, and certifications such as CompTIA, Microsoft, or Cisco are often required. Excellent problem-solving skills, patience, and strong communication abilities help you work effectively with both clients and internal teams. These skills ensure resolution of complex technical issues, high customer satisfaction, and efficient support operations.

What types of escalated issues does a Technical Support Engineer Level 3 typically handle, and how does this differ from lower support tiers?

As a Technical Support Engineer Level 3, you'll primarily tackle complex or unresolved technical issues that have been escalated from lower support tiers. These often involve deep-dive troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and working closely with product development or engineering teams to create long-term solutions. Unlike Level 1 or 2 support, which focuses on more routine problems or basic troubleshooting, Level 3 engineers frequently address product bugs, advanced configuration problems, and systemic failures. Your day may involve collaborating across departments, documenting critical incidents, and occasionally mentoring junior team members.

What is the difference between Technical Support Engineer Level 3 vs Technical Support Engineer Level 2?

Job description

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client that is seeking a Level 3 Application Support in Tampa, FL.
Overview:
Our client is seeking an experienced Level 3 Application Support Analyst to provide advanced support for a custom Tax Document Management application built on Microsoft SharePoint and Azure Platform as a Service (PaaS). This role is centered on production support, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis, with a strong emphasis on maintaining application stability and performance rather than software development.
Key Responsibilities:
Application Support & Operations:
* Manage and support ITSM processes, including Incident Management, Change Management, and Request Fulfillment
* Perform advanced troubleshooting across application, infrastructure, configuration, integration, and data layers
* Identify, analyze, and resolve complex production issues while driving long-term corrective actions
* Conduct thorough root cause analysis to prevent recurring issues and improve system reliability
* Collaborate with technical teams and stakeholders to ensure seamless application support and service delivery
Application Portfolio Support:
* Spend approximately 50-70% of time supporting the Tax Document Management application
* Provide support for a broader portfolio of .NET-based Azure applications, accounting for the remaining 30-50% of responsibilities
* Contribute to ongoing application maintenance, performance monitoring, and operational improvements across the portfolio
REQUIREMENTS:
* Strong SharePoint knowledge is the top priority; Candidates do not need to administer SharePoint directly, but a solid understanding of SharePoint architecture, administration, and support is critical for troubleshooting application issues
* Experience with Azure PaaS services, including Azure Service Bus and Azure AI Services
* Experience with Azure DevOps, Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), and automation/scripting using PowerShell, Python, or Bash
* Experience with monitoring and observability tools including Azure Application Insights and DataDog
* Intermediate SQL skills with the ability to query data, join tables, and investigate production issues
* Familiarity with AI-assisted troubleshooting tools such as Claude, Codex, Cursor, or similar technologies used to analyze code repositories and assist with production issue triage
Ideal Candidate Background:
* Application Support Engineer
* Production Support Engineer
* Azure Application Support Engineer
* SharePoint Support Engineer
* Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) with strong application support experience
Important Clarification:
This is not a software development role. While candidates should be comfortable reviewing application code and leveraging AI tools to assist with troubleshooting, the primary focus is production support, issue resolution, and application stability.
