Primary Function:
Long Wave Inc. is seeking a Technical Writer to develop, revise, and maintain clear and accurate technical content supporting Department of Defense (DoD) programs. The Technical Writer will use engineering source data, existing technical documentation, subject matter expert input, and approved technical information to develop and update IETMs, NATOPS/NATIP publications, technical manuals, procedures, and associated technical data products.
The position will focus on transforming complex engineering and technical information into clear, concise, usable content for operators, maintainers, instructors, and other end users while ensuring content remains technically accurate, configuration controlled, and compliant with applicable customer and DoD technical publication requirements.
Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Develop, write, revise, and maintain technical content for IETMs, NATOPS/NATIP publications.
  2. Review and interpret engineering source data.
  3. Translate complex engineering and system information into clear, concise, and technically accurate content appropriate for the intended operator, maintainer, or end user.
  4. Develop new publication content and revise existing content to incorporate engineering changes.
  5. Develop and update operational descriptions, maintenance instructions, troubleshooting information, procedures, warnings, cautions, notes, and other technical content as required.
  6. Work with Data Authors to ensure written technical content is appropriately structured and incorporated into S1000D data modules.
  7. Use EAGLE, Arbortext, and other technical publication or XML-based authoring tools.
  8. Coordinate with Engineering, Product Lifecycle Management, Curriculum, and subject matter experts.
  9. Maintain traceability between technical content and applicable approved engineering source data.
  10. Work with Graphic Artists to identify illustration requirements.
  11. Participate in peer reviews, technical reviews, customer reviews, validation and verification activities.
  12. Ensure technical content complies with applicable writing standards and customer requirements.
  13. Support configuration and change control activities to ensure publication content remains aligned with the approved product configuration.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Conditions:
Employee will be working within an office environment. Employee may be expected to travel on occasion to locations where specific PPE or attire is necessary.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
  1. Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  2. 1+ years of professional experience in technical writing, technical publications, technical data development, or a related field.
  3. Experience developing or revising technical manuals, IETMs, NATOPS/NATIP publications.
  4. Familiarity with S1000D and structured technical publication concepts.
  5. Familiarity with EAGLE, Arbortext, or equivalent technical publication and structured authoring tools.
  6. Strong technical writing, grammar, editing, research, and communication skills.
  7. US Citizenship and eligibility for a DoD Security Clearance is required.

Preferred Requirements:
  1. Experience supporting DoD aerospace, aviation, training system, or other complex defense programs.
  2. Experience developing or revising Navy IETMs and NATOPS/NATIP publications.
  3. Experience developing new technical content from aircraft or system engineering source data.
  4. Experience developing operational and maintenance procedures for complex hardware/software systems.
  5. Experience supporting technical publication validation and verification activities.
  6. Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM) and working within cost and schedule-controlled DoD programs.
  7. Experience supporting AS9100 or equivalent Quality Management System requirements.
  8. Active DoD Secret clearance or higher is preferred.

  • This position's standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
