What does a technical program manager in cybersecurity do?

A Technical Program Manager (TPM) in Cybersecurity oversees the planning, execution, and delivery of security-related projects and initiatives within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage project timelines, and ensure that cybersecurity programs align with business objectives and compliance requirements. TPMs also communicate risks, track progress, and implement best practices to safeguard the organization's digital assets. Their role bridges technical expertise and project management to drive successful security outcomes.

How do technical program managers in cybersecurity typically coordinate cross-functional teams to drive security initiatives?

Technical Program Managers in Cybersecurity frequently act as the bridge between engineering, security operations, compliance, and executive leadership teams. They facilitate clear communication of project goals, timelines, and security requirements, often leading regular meetings and status updates. TPMs also ensure alignment across departments by translating technical security needs into actionable tasks for diverse stakeholders, managing dependencies, and proactively addressing roadblocks. This collaborative approach helps drive the successful implementation of cybersecurity programs and fosters a culture of shared responsibility for security.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical program manager in cybersecurity, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Program Manager in Cybersecurity, you need a strong background in cybersecurity principles, program management, and risk assessment, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in a related field and certifications like PMP or CISSP. Familiarity with security frameworks, project management tools (e.g., Jira, MS Project), and incident response systems is typically expected. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage complex security initiatives. These skills are crucial for effectively leading cybersecurity programs that protect organizations from evolving threats and ensure compliance.

What is the difference between Technical Program Manager Cybersecurity vs Security Analyst?

Job description

Job Description:

You Will

  • Draft the technical roadmap and execution plan for CRA compliance and adjust it as requirements evolve.
  • Drive engineering execution for the CRA program. Assign and track work, surface risks, and keep delivery on schedule.
  • Own technical deliverables like engineering documentation/playbooks, remediation playbook templates, vulnerability handling, and audit documentation.
  • Coordinate with the product manager who owns our core platform to sequence CRA work against everything else on that roadmap.
  • Unblock the engineers implementing the work day-to-day. You don't manage them, but you keep them moving.
  • Lead technical conversations with engineers from our core platform to bridge the gap between compliance and engineering leadership so requirements are understood once and built once.

Who You Are

AI-native in how you work, write, and execute code. You default to using AI to track requirements, draft technical proposals and roadmaps, and synthesize stakeholder input, not do it by hand.

  • Experienced translating a regulatory or compliance requirement into a technical requirement plan training a developer team. Experience doesn't have to be CRA specifically, but you've done this kind of translation before.
  • A collaborator who builds relationships with engineering teams and the stakeholders you don’t manage, without someone else in the room.
  • Technically credible that your draft proposals hold up to engineering scrutiny.
  • Organized enough to own delivery tracking for a multi-team initiative without letting things slip.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in any field, or demonstrated equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of experience as a software engineer, software architect, or technical program manager, with a solid technical background.
  • Experience as a technical program manager, technical lead, or similar hybrid role, owning both technical direction and delivery tracking for cross-functional or ambiguous initiatives.
  • Deep familiarity with software security practices and requirements (SDLC, vulnerability disclosure, secure-by-design, audit documentation). Direct CRA experience is a plus, not required.
  • Track record working closely with product management and technical leadership to plan and deliver technical roadmaps outside your immediate team.
  • Strong enough grasp of software architecture to draft technical proposals that engineers and the PM can trust, even without owning final sign-off.
