Job Summary
Job Summary:
This position exists to aid students and teaching staff in the Carpentry program for 20 hours a week, along with the other trade and tech departments. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following: assist Carpentry students in the Carpentry lab and project site; assist the instructor with the demonstration of techniques and procedures to individuals or small groups so students can accurately and safely complete assignments/site tasks; organize equipment and supplies so materials are ready for student use and insure safety, security, and maintenance of the Carpentry lab/site; assist instructor to ensure student success in the attainment of educational goals; and tasks as assigned. This position will also provide support to other trade and tech programs though administrative tasks and projects for the department. A majority of this role will not be on campus but actively engaging student students in the Twin Cities area on hands-on real world construction projects. The projects are mostly near the Saint Paul metro area. The bulk of the in-person lab work is done at the start of the program, in the summer, when students are learning the fundamentals. A valid divers license and background check are required for this role.
Job Duties:
  • Assist Carpentry faculty in order for students to complete the assignments.
  • Assist with the demonstration of workshop techniques and procedures to individuals or small groups so students can accurately and safety complete assignments
  • Assist with the organization of equipment and supplies
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Post secondary course work in Carpentry sufficient to provide technical lab services for students, faculty, and staff OR Two years' experience as a lab assistant in Carpentry at the high school level or above OR An equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Valid Minnesota Driver's License
  • Knowledge of basic safety principles for hand tools, and active construction site safety protocols
  • Basic experience with blueprint reading and estimating

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Diploma in Carpentry
  • Proficient user in a Microsoft Windows Environment including a thorough knowledge of windows applications, including word processing, spreadsheets and databases;
  • Ability to identify and diagnose software problems including industry-based project management software;
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing;
  • One year teaching/tutoring experience at the high school level or above;
  • Ability to understand and navigate specific computer software programs;
  • Experience working on active residential sites that can include new builds, remodels, renovations
  • Safety certifications like OSHA 10
