Technical Design Internship information

What is a technical design internship?

A Technical Design Internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the technical aspects of fashion or product design. Interns work closely with technical designers and other team members to assist in tasks such as creating technical sketches, preparing specification sheets, and ensuring that designs are accurately translated into finished products. This role typically involves collaboration with pattern makers, manufacturers, and the design team to troubleshoot construction issues and maintain quality standards. The internship provides valuable industry insight and practical skills for those pursuing a career in technical design.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a technical design internship?

During a Technical Design Internship, you can expect to participate in a variety of projects that may include developing technical specifications, assisting in prototype creation, collaborating with engineering and design teams, and supporting the documentation process. Interns often help refine design concepts, conduct research on materials or technologies, and test product functionality to ensure feasibility. The role typically offers hands-on experience with design software and opportunities to contribute ideas in team meetings, providing a well-rounded introduction to the technical design workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Design Intern, you need a foundation in apparel construction, pattern making, and garment specification, supported by coursework or a degree in fashion design or a related field. Familiarity with software like Adobe Illustrator, CAD systems, and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) platforms is often required. Attention to detail, strong communication, and willingness to learn are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for bridging the gap between creative design and production, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in the development process.
