What is technical accounting?

Technical accounting refers to the specialized area of accounting that deals with complex, often non-routine transactions and the interpretation and application of accounting standards such as GAAP or IFRS. Professionals in technical accounting roles analyze new accounting pronouncements, assist with implementing new standards, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. They are often called upon to provide guidance on intricate accounting issues like revenue recognition, lease accounting, and business combinations. Technical accountants also help organizations maintain accurate financial reporting and stay up-to-date with evolving accounting rules.

What are some common challenges faced in a technical accounting role and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Technical Accounting often encounter complex and evolving accounting standards, such as ASC 606 or IFRS 16, which require thorough interpretation and application. Navigating these standards can be challenging, especially when dealing with unique or non-routine transactions. Staying current through continuous learning and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—such as finance, legal, and external auditors—can help ensure accurate reporting and compliance. Additionally, strong documentation and communication skills are essential to clearly explain technical concepts to stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Accountant, you need deep expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting standards (such as US GAAP or IFRS), and typically a CPA or similar certification. Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, advanced Excel skills, and experience interpreting complex accounting guidance are essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you translate technical standards into actionable business insights. These skills ensure accurate financial compliance, effective problem-solving, and clear guidance for organizational decision-making.

Job description

FinQuery stands at the forefront of accounting automation, driven by a deep specialty in contract-driven accounting. Our AI-enabled platform transforms how controllers and finance teams operate, seamlessly managing and accounting for the complex financial contracts—like leases, prepaids, and accruals—that are the backbone of modern business. We are not just a software provider; we are the unified subledger that eliminates time-intensive, error-prone technical accounting workflows, ensuring financial reports are accurate and empowering our customers to focus on strategic, high-value tasks.

FinQuery is the global leader in lease accounting (as recognized on G2.com) and serves more than 8,500 customers worldwide. Our growth trajectory has been consistently validated by the Inc 5000, which has recognized us as one of the fastest-growing private companies for five consecutive years.

About the role

FinQuery is building the system of record for financial obligations. As we expand across leases, debt, fixed assets, and accruals, our edge is the depth of technical accounting expertise behind the product.

The Senior Technical Accounting Advisor contributes to that advantage as a hands‑on expert who works directly with our product teams, advises customers, and builds an external profile in the profession. This is a strong fit for a Big Four manager or senior manager who wants the intellectual challenge of technical accounting without the partner track ahead of them.

What You Will Do:

Be the expert in one or more of our technical accounting subledger products — lease accounting, fixed assets, debt management, accruals and prepaid accounting. You will go deep on the standards behind the product and own the accounting accuracy of what we ship.

Partner with Product Managers to spec features and resolve the accounting questions that come up during the build. You will be in the detail.

Contribute to FinQuery's AI governance work by providing technical accounting input on what AI‑assisted outputs are defensible, how accounting judgment should be applied, and where human review is required.

Handle complex technical accounting questions from internal teams and customers across multiple standards.

Support new product concept evaluation by providing technical accounting analysis on accounting soundness and identifying potential guidance gaps before engineering commits resources.

Research new and changing standards and brief internal stakeholders on what matters, what is coming, and what it means for our product and customers.

Write blogs, guides, and technical explainers that establish FinQuery as the authority in technical accounting. Join panels and webinars as you build your external profile.

What You Bring:

Required:

  • Active CPA license.
  • Six or more years of technical accounting experience, including meaningful time in a Big Four or national firm technical accounting role.
  • Strong working knowledge across several complex standards, with real depth in at least one — leases, debt, fixed assets, revenue recognition, or hedge accounting.
  • Clear writing and the ability to explain technical accounting to a general audience.
  • Track record of advising on complex accounting questions with accuracy and confidence.

Strongly preferred:

  • Experience working in or alongside software product teams.
  • Familiarity with AI tools or audit automation and comfort evaluating how AI‑assisted accounting outputs hold up to scrutiny.
  • International standards experience (IFRS, GASB).
Why this role

Curiosity about software and how it gets built. You do not need to code, but you need to enjoy working with people who do. If you want the intellectual depth of technical accounting applied to a product that changes how thousands of accounting teams close their books, this is the seat.
