What is a tech designer?

A Tech Designer, also known as a Technical Designer, is a professional who acts as a bridge between the artistic and technical teams in industries like video game development, fashion, or product design. They ensure that creative ideas are technically feasible and can be implemented within the constraints of hardware, software, or manufacturing processes. In gaming, for example, Tech Designers work closely with programmers, artists, and game designers to develop and integrate gameplay features, tools, or systems. Their role requires both creative problem-solving and strong technical skills, often involving scripting, prototyping, and process optimization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tech designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tech Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, user experience (UX), and technical proficiency, often backed by a degree in design, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping platforms, as well as knowledge of coding languages like HTML, CSS, or JavaScript, is highly valued. Strong collaboration, creative problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating innovative, user-centered digital products that meet both technical and aesthetic requirements.

Job description

At HDR, our employee-owners are fully engaged in creating a welcoming environment where each of us is valued and respected, a place where everyone is empowered to bring their authentic selves and novel ideas to work every day. As we work to weave diversity, equity, and inclusion into our work and foster a sense of belonging throughout the company and within our communities, we constantly ask ourselves: What is our impact on the world?
Watch Our Story:' https://www.hdrinc.com/our-story'
We believe that the way we work can add meaning and value to the world. That ideas inspire positive change. That coloring outside the lines can illuminate fresh perspectives. And that small details yield important realizations. Above all, we believe that collaboration is the best way forward.
We believe waste is more than management, it's also an opportunity to innovate. As part of our Waste sector, you'll help shape solid waste infrastructure and environmental stewardship. With a top-tier industry ranking, our team delivers comprehensive solutions that span waste planning, remediation, engineering and implementation. You'll collaborate closely with clients and communities to design sustainable, cost-effective systems that contribute to cleaner environments and healthier communities. This isn't just a job, it's a chance to drive meaningful changes in the waste industry and build a legacy of sustainability.
Our Nebraska/Iowa solid waste team serves the region with work that ranges from landfill cells and caps, scale houses, roads, stormwater controls, recycling centers, transfer station, and more - from conceptualization through construction level design.
About You
HDR currently has an opening for a junior-level Civil CAD technologist/designer with a background in site/civil design and grading, land development, earthwork projects, or environmental remediation with the technical skills and desire to help support our North American Solid Waste and Remediation program.
Based in Omaha, Nebraska, the Civil CAD technologist/designer will work under the direction of a senior CAD designer servicing multiple professional engineers and designers by supporting complex assignments including the development of conceptual layouts, permit level drawings, bid and construction level drawings, sketches, maps, and graphic representations of engineering designs using computer-aided drafting software. The position requires working knowledge and experience in AutoCAD with good working knowledge of Civil 3D. Experience with grading, utilities (storm, water, sanitary), construction documents and technical knowledge of municipal civil engineering standards is a plus. Work may also entail data compilation, generation of spreadsheets, technical calculations, reports, research, and environmental compliance.
The candidate should have a strong academic and/or internship background along with an initiative to perform computer-aided drafting tasks related to land development, waste management, conceptual facility design, planning, and stormwater management for municipal and private clients. The candidate must be adaptable to conditions including fast-paced and deadline driven work environment.
In the role of Civil CAD technologist/designer, we will count on you to assist Project Managers/Project Engineers with:
  • Preparation of permit, bid, and construction level drawings.
  • Developing conceptual plans, site layouts, grading plans and sections, underground utility plans, stormwater drainage plans, and details under the direction of the senior CAD designer and project engineers.
  • Performing routine drawing assignments requiring application of standard techniques and procedures.
  • Performing administrative duties associated with project management for civil/site projects.
  • Performing annotative support.
  • Performing other general support duties as needed.

  • A good understanding of grading, topography, and drainage patterns.
  • Proven team player who takes initiative and is confident in their technical skills.
  • Willingness to learn and adjust to project needs, evolving standards, and design approaches.
  • Strong problem solving and learning ability.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Willingness to assist with a wide range of projects and work with multiple project managers.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.
  • 2+ years' experience in civil engineering drafting/design with recent versions of AutoCAD software.
  • Proficient knowledge of construction documents.
