What is team drilling?

Team drilling refers to a collaborative work approach where a group of professionals operates drilling equipment together to complete drilling projects, often in industries such as oil and gas, mining, or construction. The team typically includes roles like drill operators, engineers, safety officers, and support staff, all working in coordination to ensure the drilling is executed safely, efficiently, and according to plan. Team drilling emphasizes communication, safety protocols, and the sharing of technical expertise to overcome challenges in complex drilling environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drilling team member?

To thrive as a Drilling Team Member, you generally need a solid understanding of drilling operations, safety protocols, and mechanical aptitude, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant technical training. Familiarity with drilling rigs, heavy machinery, and industry-standard safety certifications such as H2S or Well Control are typically required. Strong teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail are essential soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and productive drilling operations in demanding environments.

How does a team drilling professional typically collaborate with other departments on a project site?

Team Drilling professionals regularly coordinate with geologists, engineers, and safety officers to ensure drilling activities align with project specifications and safety standards. Effective communication is essential, as drilling teams must adjust plans based on site assessments and feedback from these stakeholders. Collaboration often involves daily briefings, shared progress reports, and joint problem-solving to address unexpected challenges such as equipment malfunctions or geological surprises. This teamwork ensures that drilling operations are efficient, safe, and meet the project's goals.

What is the difference between Team Drilling vs Drilling Operator?

AspectTeam DrillingDrilling Operator

Employer & Industry UsageUsed by drilling companies, oil & gas industryUsed by drilling companies, oil & gas industry
Job FocusTeam coordination, safety, and operational supportOperating drilling equipment, monitoring drilling process

Both roles are essential in the drilling industry, often working closely together. While a Drilling Operator primarily focuses on operating equipment, a Team Drilling member supports overall operations and safety. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Requisition Number: 2026-2190-07

S&ME is looking for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in hands-on work, and is hard-working and reliable as a full-time Driller to join our Field Exploration team in Greensboro, North Carolina.

At S&ME, we have a history of delivering innovative geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction material testing for over 50 years. Over the decades, we have grown into a trusted partner for clients across various industries, including transportation, energy, water, waste management, education, government, commercial, industrial, and more. Our commitment to technical excellence and integrity has established us as a leader in our field.

Why Work at S&ME?

  • Employee Ownership: As a 100% employee-owned company, our ESOP gives you a personal stake in our success and the opportunity to build long-term wealth while helping shape our future.
  • Career Growth: We invest in your success with mentorship, training, and leadership opportunities.
  • Exciting Projects: Big or small, simple or complex, we do it all. Our projects are as diverse as they are exciting, so every day brings something new.
  • Supportive Culture: Collaboration, respect, and positivity fuel our team environment.
  • Flexibility: Work-life balance matters to us, helping you thrive inside and outside the office.
  • Community Impact: Your work will directly improve the communities where we live, work, and play.

About The Role:

As a Driller, you'll support and coordinate drilling operations with minimal supervision from a senior driller. You'll oversee and mentor a team of driller assistants and drillers, ensuring the use of the best drilling techniques and equipment for each project. Your responsibilities will include mobilizing drill equipment, ordering project materials (with management approval), and maintaining, cleaning, and calibrating testing and inspection equipment.

We value safety, quality workmanship, and integrity. If you're dependable, enjoy working outdoors year-round, and are open to traveling (with paid hotels and per diem), we want you on our team!

  • Drilling Operations: Manage operations for assigned projects by overseeing lower-level drillers.
  • Field Sampling: Review field logs, samples, and data from subordinate drill personnel and communicate with management and technical staff.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Oversee vehicle and equipment maintenance to ensure good working conditions and determine the need for equipment.
  • Quality: Assure that all drilling functions, including quality control, quality assurance, and verification, are performed per the standard drilling methods, project specifications, and other contract documents.
  • Coordination of Others: Coordinate and oversee the daily activities on medium to large projects of assigned driller assistants and communicate field conditions and job progress to management and professional staff daily.

About You:

  • You have a High school diploma or GED
  • You have a minimum of 3 years of Geotechnical and/or Environmental Drilling experience
  • You have the following Certifications/Licensure:
    • Commercial Driver's License (CDL), a plus
    • valid Driller license
  • You have effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) in English
  • You understand and can perform routine vehicle and equipment maintenance
  • You have working knowledge of multiple drilling methods, including hollow stem auger, mud rotary, and rock coring techniques

You Are Willing and Able to:

Perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)

This role is not for those seeking a climate-controlled workspace, but it's incredibly rewarding for individuals who enjoy being hands-on, traveling, solving problems, and seeing projects take shape from the ground up.

Grow With Us:

At S&ME, your career growth matters. You'll receive professional training, work on exciting projects, and be part of a company that truly invests in its people. This is more than a job; it's a chance to build a long-term career in the engineering and construction industry. S&ME provides a comprehensive benefits package to support you and your family, as well as career development resources. Come grow and thrive with us at S&ME!

  • Medical, Dental & Vision Plans with HSA and FSA options
  • 100% Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) with a 5% company contribution
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Paid Holidays and Paid Time Off (PTO) - with rollover options
  • Paid Maternity/Parental Leave
  • Employee Recognition Program
  • Credential Incentive Program
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Company Vehicle with Fuel Card for Project-Based Work
  • $2,000 Referral Bonuses & More!

Join us at S&ME!

This full-time role offers competitive pay based on experience. Candidates must comply with our Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements. Only candidates with valid employment eligibility (I-9) will be considered. Visa assistance is not available. S&ME reserves the right to hire internally or externally at any time.
