What is tax strategy?

Tax strategy refers to the planning and methods individuals or businesses use to minimize their tax liability within the bounds of the law. It involves understanding current tax regulations, identifying deductions, credits, and incentives, and making financial decisions that optimize tax outcomes. Tax strategists analyze financial transactions and structures to ensure compliance while maximizing tax efficiency. Effective tax strategy can lead to substantial savings and improved financial health for both individuals and organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in tax strategy, and why are they important?

To thrive in Tax Strategy, you need a solid background in accounting or finance, deep knowledge of tax laws, and often a CPA or similar certification. Familiarity with tax preparation software, financial modeling tools, and ERP systems like SAP is typical in this field. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals excel when interpreting regulations and advising clients or businesses. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring compliance, optimizing tax positions, and supporting organizational financial goals.

How does a tax strategy professional typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Tax Strategy professionals frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with finance, legal, and operations teams to ensure that tax planning aligns with wider business objectives. They provide guidance on tax implications of business decisions, mergers, acquisitions, and international transactions. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as tax strategists help interpret complex regulations and ensure compliance while identifying opportunities for savings and risk mitigation. These collaborations help organizations make informed financial decisions and maintain a strong compliance posture.

We’re a high-performing, fast-moving team with ethics at the center of everything we do. Expectations are high, and so are the rewards.

The Income Tax team at Robinhood is responsible for leading our global corporate tax strategy, planning, and compliance as our business grows in complexity. Our team oversees global tax planning, legal entity structures, and inter-company agreements. We focus on tax provision (ASC 740), compliance, transfer pricing, and structuring for international reporting. We are committed to maintaining tax compliance and technical standards across all our global operations!

As the Senior Director of Income Tax, you will lead our global corporate income tax function and direct our international tax strategy. You will oversee a talented team of tax professionals, managing their growth and alignment with Robinhood’s strategic objectives. In this role, you will design and implement tax structures, manage inter-company agreements, and support our growing international operations. You will collaborate closely with key leaders within the org, and present key tax developments to executive leadership. Your work will directly shape our corporate tax framework and ensure our compliance during this exciting phase of international growth!

This role is based in our Menlo Park, CA, with in-person attendance expected 5 days per week.

At Robinhood, we believe in the power of in-person work to accelerate progress, spark innovation, and strengthen community. Our office experience is intentional, energizing, and designed to fully support high-performing teams.

What you’ll do
  • Direct and design Robinhood’s global tax planning and tax strategy, ensuring alignment with our expanding operations and business complexity.
  • Oversee and manage the international corporate tax lifecycle, including transfer pricing, inter-company agreements, legal entity maintenance, and global tax compliance.
  • Oversee all aspects of indirect tax strategy and compliance, including VAT, GST, sales tax, digital services taxes, and related international consumption tax matters across multiple jurisdictions. Provide guidance on tax matters for mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring activities, ensuring optimal integration of tax considerations into deal structures.
  • Oversee and provide guidance on all federal, state, and local income tax operation for various pass-through and fund structures.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing tax team, including managing managers and senior tax professionals across compliance, provision, and reporting.
  • Partner closely with product, accounting, legal, and treasury departments to evaluate the tax implications of new products, operational flows, legal entity structure, and international expansion initiatives to support tax-efficient business growth and ensure compliance with global tax requirements.
  • Direct the global income tax provision (ASC 740) and tax compliance, ensuring accurate reporting and strong internal controls.
  • Represent the tax department in discussions with executive leadership and external auditors on complex international tax and structuring matters.
What you bring
  • At least 15+ years of corporate tax experience, with a heavy emphasis on international tax planning, strategy, and compliance within a multinational corporation or major public accounting firm.
  • Proven experience as a people leader, with a track record of hiring, mentoring, and scaling high-performing tax teams (including managing managers).
  • Deep expertise in international tax concepts, transfer pricing, inter-company agreements, legal entity structuring, and ASC 740 tax provisions.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex global tax structures and reporting requirements to executive leaders and board members.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent practical experience; a CPA, Master of Taxation, or JD/LLM is highly preferred.

Our ambitious roadmap requires a great culture shaped by exceptional leaders. Here’s what we expect from them:

  • Drive high performance by setting clear, focused goals, giving real-time feedback, stretching top talent, and scaling impact through focus, innovation, and tech.
  • Hire and retain top talent by setting a high bar, hiring only those who raise it, investing in onboarding, and addressing talent issues quickly and fairly.
  • Create community by connecting work to purpose, removing friction while prioritizing safety, building trust and inclusion, and leading from the front with integrity.
What we offer
  • Challenging, high-impact work to grow your career.
  • Performance-driven compensation with multipliers for outsized impact, bonus programs, equity ownership, and 401(k) matching.
  • Best-in-class benefits to fuel your work, including 100% paid health insurance for employees with 90% coverage for dependents.
  • Lifestyle wallet — a highly flexible benefits spending account for wellness, learning, and more.
  • Employer-paid life & disability insurance, fertility benefits, and mental health benefits.
  • Time off to recharge including company holidays, paid time off, sick time, parental leave, and more!
