Tax Strategy information

What is tax strategy?

Tax strategy refers to the planning and methods individuals or businesses use to minimize their tax liability within the bounds of the law. It involves understanding current tax regulations, identifying deductions, credits, and incentives, and making financial decisions that optimize tax outcomes. Tax strategists analyze financial transactions and structures to ensure compliance while maximizing tax efficiency. Effective tax strategy can lead to substantial savings and improved financial health for both individuals and organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in tax strategy, and why are they important?

To thrive in Tax Strategy, you need a solid background in accounting or finance, deep knowledge of tax laws, and often a CPA or similar certification. Familiarity with tax preparation software, financial modeling tools, and ERP systems like SAP is typical in this field. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals excel when interpreting regulations and advising clients or businesses. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring compliance, optimizing tax positions, and supporting organizational financial goals.

How does a tax strategy professional typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Tax Strategy professionals frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with finance, legal, and operations teams to ensure that tax planning aligns with wider business objectives. They provide guidance on tax implications of business decisions, mergers, acquisitions, and international transactions. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as tax strategists help interpret complex regulations and ensure compliance while identifying opportunities for savings and risk mitigation. These collaborations help organizations make informed financial decisions and maintain a strong compliance posture.

What is the difference between Tax Strategy vs Tax Analyst?

Tax Strategy professionals develop long-term tax plans and policies to optimize a company's tax position, often working closely with senior management. Tax Analysts focus on analyzing financial data, preparing tax returns, and ensuring compliance with tax laws. While both roles require strong tax knowledge and certifications, Tax Strategy roles are more strategic and policy-oriented, whereas Tax Analysts are more operational and detail-focused.

How do I become a tax strategist?

To become a tax strategist, you typically need a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, followed by gaining experience in tax planning and compliance. Earning professional certifications such as CPA or Enrolled Agent can enhance credibility, and developing strong analytical and communication skills is essential for success in this role.

What does a tax strategist do?

A tax strategist develops and implements tax planning strategies to minimize a company's or individual's tax liabilities while ensuring compliance with tax laws. They analyze financial data, stay updated on tax regulations, and often use specialized tools or software to optimize tax outcomes. Their work supports financial goals and may involve collaboration with accountants and legal professionals.

THE ROLE:

We are seeking a highly talented and experienced Tax Counsel to join AMD’s Tax Research and Planning team.  The position involves leading the design and development of tax planning initiatives and transactions, performing research on complex US and international tax issues, leading M&A tax due diligence and integration planning, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement solutions to drive AMD’s global tax strategy.  In this role, you will work closely with AMD Tax leadership on a variety of high-priority projects and transactions.

This role offers a unique opportunity for the right candidate to contribute meaningfully to the company’s global tax strategy supporting its growth and the development of leading-edge technology. You will join a collaborative team with direct access to senior tax leadership and broad exposure across tax planning, controversy, and M&A.  This role reports to the Director of Tax Research and Planning, who oversees AMD’s global tax strategy, M&A, controversy, transfer pricing, and tax policy functions.

THE PERSON:

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with a solid tax legal background and proven experience developing solutions to address complex tax issues faced by multinational corporations.  Excellent analytical and communication skills are required, along with the ability to work effectively on cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects with competing priorities.  The candidate should have strong experience with US and international tax concepts and must be able to excel in a fast-paced and demanding work environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the development, design, and implementation of tax planning initiatives and transactions to drive AMD’s global tax strategy
  • Partner closely with cross-functional teams across AMD to ensure successful implementation of strategic transactions and tax planning initiatives
  • Lead tax due diligence for M&A deals and the development of tax acquisition and integration plans working with cross-functional teams
  • Assist with the management of tax audits, including research of technical issues, responding to inquiries from tax authorities, and development of audit strategy
  • Perform technical research and analysis of US and foreign tax laws and regulations to determine impact to the company’s tax strategy and legal entity structure
  • Work closely with AMD Treasury on the design and implementation of strategies to optimize global cash management and intercompany financing structures
  • Collaborate with the AMD tax provision and compliance team to ensure planning transactions and tax legislative developments are reflected accurately from a tax reporting perspective
  • Assist with review and development of the tax provisions of third-party contracts, intercompany agreements, and other legal documentation
  • Partner with AMD’s Government Relations team on tax policy strategy and priorities

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working at a law firm or Big 4 public accounting firm focused on complex US and international tax issues
  • Strong experience with US Federal tax, Subchapter C, US international tax, and intercompany reorganizations and restructurings
  • Demonstrated experience leading or supporting M&A tax due diligence and acquisition structuring
  • Excellent tax research and analytical skills
  • Proven experience handling multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • J.D. required with LL.M (Taxation) or graduate degree in accounting, tax, or a related field preferred
