What is tax season?

Tax season is the period each year when individuals and businesses prepare and file their tax returns with the government, typically to report income and determine tax liability. In the United States, tax season usually runs from January to mid-April, with the deadline to file federal income taxes generally falling on April 15. During this time, people gather financial documents, complete tax forms, and may seek help from tax professionals to ensure their returns are accurate and timely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax preparer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Preparer, you need a strong understanding of tax regulations, attention to detail, and typically a background in accounting or finance, often supported by certifications such as the IRS Annual Filing Season Program. Familiarity with tax preparation software like TurboTax, Drake, or ProSeries and experience with electronic filing systems are essential. Strong communication, client service, and organizational skills help you stand out in this client-facing role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate tax filings, minimizing errors, and building trust with clients during the busy tax season.

What are some common challenges tax professionals face during tax season, and how can they be managed?

During tax season, professionals often encounter high workloads, tight deadlines, and the need to stay current with frequently changing tax laws. Managing multiple client files simultaneously and ensuring accuracy under pressure can be challenging. Effective time management, clear communication with clients, and utilizing tax software tools can significantly help manage these demands. Many teams also encourage collaboration and regular check-ins to share updates and distribute workload efficiently. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance during this busy period is crucial to avoid burnout.

Job description

Tax Manager - North Raleigh | Wake Forest

About the Role
Our growing CPA firm is seeking experienced tax professionals for our North Raleigh and Wake Forest offices to prepare, review, and manage relationships with a diverse portfolio of individual and business income tax clients while leading the development and execution of proactive tax strategies for our small business prospects and clients.

This is a high-visibility role for someone who wants to combine technical depth with real client relationships and work with a collaborative team — not just process returns in isolation. Our ideal candidate is someone who can help clients easily navigate the complex world of taxes and enjoys helping people. Sound like a job you’ll love? Apply today!

Compensation:

$100,000 +

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and review federal, state, and local income tax returns for individuals, S-corps, partnerships, and other small business entities

  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies, including entity selection and optimization, tailored to each client's situation

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for a group of clients, maintaining regular communication throughout the year, not just during tax season

  • Research complex tax issues and stay current on new tax matters

  • Review work prepared by junior staff, provide feedback, and mentor team members

  • Collaborate with the firm's accounting, bookkeeping, and advisory teams to deliver a seamless client experience

  • Respond to IRS and state notices, audits, and correspondence on clients' behalf

  • Set up periodic meetings to collaborate with clients on what's happening and the status of strategy implementation

  • Meet with prospects to evaluate needs, go over financial records and tax returns, and develop an implementation plan for the new client

Qualifications:
  • Experience handling both basic and advanced levels of tax service, and has in-depth knowledge of the tax code, state tax laws, and federal tax laws
  • Licensed CPA - non-Big 4 experience preferred

  • Capable of preparing error-free, moderately complex tax returns

  • Experience with QuickBooks and cloud-based tax/accounting software

  • Experience with CCH Axcess Tax is a plus

  • Comfortable in a hybrid work environment with regular in-office collaboration

  • We value humility over ego — leave your hubris at the door; it's one of our core values here

About Company

Why You’ll Love Working Here:

  • Stability without the stagnation. Sixty-plus years in business and still growing—the security of an established firm with the momentum of one going somewhere.

  • Growth built around you. Training and feedback meet you where you are, so you're always advancing toward the advisor you want to become.

  • A team that shows up. We celebrate wins together and pull for each other when busy season hits—no one carries the load alone.

  • Modern tools, meaningful work. We invest in automation and smart tech so your time goes to advising clients, not chasing spreadsheets.

  • Real relationships, real impact. Your clients—small business + their owners and successful individuals—know your name and value your expertise. You'll see the difference you make.

  • A life outside the office. Flexible schedules, summer Fridays after April 15, and a culture built around balance, not burnout.
