Accounting Analyst - Tax & Regulatory

Full-time Regular Charlotte, NC, US

2 days ago Requisition ID: 1618

JOB TITLE: Accounting Analyst – Tax & Regulatory

REPORTING TO: NetworkAssets Manager

JOB PURPOSE

TheAccounting Analyst – Tax & Regulatory owns the data, reconciliation, and accounting behind the company's indirect, regulatory, property, and income tax obligations for a multi-jurisdictional telecommunications organization.Rather than preparing and filing returns directly, this role is the central data steward and liaison to the company's third-party tax providers, who handle the actual preparation, filing, and payment. The Analyst pulls, cleans, maps, and validates the source data those providers rely on, records the related accounting, reconciles the tax liability accounts, and explains why the balances are what they are so the company can be confident its reported liabilities are complete and correct. Therolealso owns the company's FCC regulatory data filings, including Forms 499 and 477, and manages tax exemption documentation across vendors and customers. This is an accounting position with a current concentration in tax and regulatory compliance, and the individual in this role is expected to support other accounting areas as business needs and priorities change.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pull, clean, map, and validate source data from billing, revenue, GL, and fixed-asset systems for the indirect, regulatory, and property tax filings.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the third-party providers who prepare, file, and pay these returns, giving them the schedules they need and reviewing their work.
  • Record the accounting from provider deliverables and reconcile the tax liability accounts monthly, resolving variances and explaining period-over-period movements to management.
  • Own the data preparation of the FCC Form 499 filings, classifying interstate, intrastate, and international revenue and reconciling it to the GL and billing systems.
  • Own the data preparation of the FCC Form 477 broadband deployment filing, mapping subscription and location data and reconciling it to internal systems.
  • Manage exemption documentation on purchases, working with AP to provide vendor certificates and confirm the correct tax on network cost and other invoices.
  • Work with Billing to collect and retain customer tax-exempt and reseller certificates so customers are billed correctly.
  • Maintain the tax calendar, track filing deadlines, support registrations, and audit or notice responses.
  • Support general accounting and month-end close as needed, including journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and other duties assigned based on department workload and business priorities.
  • Drive process improvements, including AI and automation, across data gathering, reconciliation, and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced Excel is essential: pivot tables, lookups, and large data sets, with the ability to tie multiple sources back to one defensible answer.
  • Self-directed and resourceful, able to work through new or ambiguous problems with minimal direction, ask the right questions, and adapt rather than rely on step-by-step processes.
  • Comfortable adopting AI and automation tools to work more efficiently and strengthen data quality and controls.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, able to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Clear written and verbal communication for working with outside advisors and internal teams.
  • Flexible and adaptable, willing to take on assignments across other accounting functions and shift focus as departmental needs evolve.
  • Telecommunications regulatory reporting exposure (FCC Form 499, USF, OPSTAT) is a plus; more important is the ability to interpret filing instructions and coordinate effectively with regulators, auditors, and advisors.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required.
  • 2–4 years of accounting experience, including monthly journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close support. A mix of public accounting and industry experience is welcomed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with large data sets across multiple systems and reconcile them to a single supportable answer. This capability matters more to us than the industry in which it was built.
  • Experience with an ERP system and multi-entity or multi-jurisdictional organizations; telecommunications or regulated industry a plus but not required.
  • Willingness to occasionally adjust hours to meet filing, close, and reporting deadlines.

We celebrate and support diversity for the benefit of our employees, our business, and our community. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and a workplace which leverages and thrives on the diversity and inclusion of everyone on our team to drive excellence throughout our organization.
