What does a tax intern do?

As a tax intern, you support professional tax preparers and assist with general office duties. An internship in tax planning involves financial and accounting responsibilities, including preparing federal, state, and international tax filings. Most accounting internships require enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program in accounting, finance, business, or information technology as one of the qualifications. You will work with an accountant, CPA, enrolled agent, or other tax professional, and duties can include analyzing data, using tax software, and working directly with clients. A career in accounting or tax preparation often starts with earning a degree or certificate, but taking a job as a tax intern hones the skills you develop in class.

What does a tax intern do?

A Tax Intern assists tax professionals in preparing and filing tax returns, researching tax laws, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. They may also help organize financial documents, gather client information, and support audits or tax planning projects. The internship provides hands-on experience in tax processes and software, helping students or recent graduates build foundational knowledge for a career in taxation.

What types of projects and tasks can a tax intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Tax Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects, including preparing tax returns, assisting with tax research, and supporting senior staff during audits. You'll often help organize and analyze financial data, review documentation for accuracy, and learn to use tax software. Interns typically collaborate closely with experienced tax professionals, gaining exposure to client communications and the full tax preparation cycle. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into both compliance and advisory aspects of tax accounting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Intern, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and coursework in taxation, typically supported by progress toward an accounting or finance degree. Familiarity with tax preparation software, Microsoft Excel, and possibly introductory knowledge of IRS regulations are commonly expected. Strong analytical skills, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help you stand out in this role. These skills enable accurate tax preparation, compliance, and effective support to senior tax professionals in fast-paced environments.
