The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $92,000 - $115,000.  Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

Under the direction and supervision of the Manager, Tax Reporting & Compliance, the Senior Tax Specialist is responsible for providing comprehensive internal income tax and indirect tax (GST/HST, PST) compliance services.  This role will include preparing Canadian income tax provisions and returns as well as preparing indirect tax returns, carrying out research on various tax topics as required related to Wawanesa's insurance and broker entities.

Note: This role is expected to be a 12 month term.


Job Responsibilities

  • Prepares and/or reviews quarterly and annual tax provisions and tax returns.
  • Prepares and/or reviews the monthly, quarterly and annual tax filings, including information returns and elections, with respect to indirect taxes (GST/PST), and income tax filings.
  • Collaborates with financial reporting team to ensure all income tax and indirect tax financial reporting requirements are met and internal enquiries, issues and concerns are addressed.
  • Assists with income tax and indirect tax audits. Maintains amicable relationships with external auditors.
  • Interprets and analyzes Canadian income tax and indirect tax laws to provide guidance on tax law changes.
  • Reviews and analyzes premium tax reconciliations and supporting working papers prepared by Finance teams which are used for return and provision preparation.
  • Collaborates with our internal business partners to ensure system compliance with respect income tax  and indirect taxes.
  • Prepares and/or reviews indirect tax recovery engagements and special assignments.
  • Develops processes and efficiencies for compliance with indirect and income tax filings.
  • Performs and/or reviews tax research, other adhoc tax related strategies and other duties as directed or assigned by the Manager, Tax Reporting & Compliance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in Accounting or other related post-secondary degree.
  • CPA accounting designation preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years in industry, government, or public practice.
  • Previous experience in dealing with taxation auditors (CRA & provincial tax authorities).
  • Strong teamwork skills. Treats others with respect and courtesy and shares thoughts and ideas with the rest of the team. Works to ensure group objectives are met by making quality contributions and supporting fellow team members.
  • Positive and confident individual who communicates in a persuasive and eloquent manner (both written and oral).
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills by keeping track of the status of various tasks and project activities.
  • Excellent attention to detail. Examines all information completely to identify everything that is relevant and all potential impacts.
  • Strong negotiation skills by presenting information or arguments in a convincing manner and by focusing on what is important.
  • Previous experience in working for financial institutions (or servicing financial institutions) is preferred.
  • Completion of CPA Canada In-depth tax courses considered an asset.
