Tax Collection information

What is a tax collector?

Tax collectors are professionals responsible for collecting taxes owed to government agencies from individuals and businesses. Their main duties include notifying taxpayers of their obligations, processing payments, investigating delinquent accounts, and sometimes initiating enforcement actions to recover unpaid taxes. They may work for local, state, or federal tax authorities and often interact with the public to resolve questions or disputes about taxes owed. Accurate record-keeping and strong communication skills are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax collector?

To thrive as a Tax Collector, you need a strong understanding of tax laws, accounting principles, and attention to detail, often supported by a degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with tax collection software, government databases, and sometimes certification like an Enrolled Agent credential is typically required. Excellent negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills help build rapport with taxpayers and resolve disputes effectively. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate revenue collection, compliance with regulations, and maintaining public trust.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in tax collection, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in tax collection often encounter challenges such as dealing with non-compliant taxpayers, navigating complex tax regulations, and managing high caseloads. Effective communication skills and empathy are crucial when negotiating payment plans or resolving disputes. Staying organized and up-to-date with current tax laws helps ensure accuracy and compliance. Many agencies provide ongoing training and support, and teamwork is essential for sharing strategies and best practices to address these challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Product Demonstrations & Solution Positioning

  • Own the overall demo strategy, standardize demo messaging, and build a repeatable demo playbook
  • Lead live and virtual demonstrations of Harris Govern's property tax, assessment, and valuation solutions for prospective customers.
  • Deliver demonstrations through a consultative sales lens, emphasizing customer outcomes, operational efficiencies, and business value rather than feature-by-feature training.
  • Tailor demonstrations to address each jurisdiction's priorities, workflows, operational challenges, and strategic objectives.
  • Translate complex product capabilities into clear, compelling messages for executive stakeholders, assessors, appraisal districts, tax officials, and end users.
  • Effectively communicate Harris Govern's unique differentiators and competitive advantages.
  • Develop demonstrations that clearly differentiate Harris Govern from competitive solutions.

Demo Environment Management

  • Configure, maintain, and continuously enhance demonstration environments used throughout the sales process.
  • Develop customer-specific demo scenarios that reflect real-world appraisal, assessment, valuation, and property tax administration workflows.
  • Continuously evolve demonstration environments to showcase emerging capabilities, AI innovation, industry best practices, and customer-specific workflows.
  • Ensure demonstrations are polished, accurate, relevant, and aligned to customer evaluation criteria.

Sales Support & Discovery

  • Partner closely with Sales Executives throughout the pre-sales cycle.
  • Participate in discovery sessions to understand customer goals, challenges, procurement requirements, and success criteria.
  • Help identify solution fit and align demonstrations to customer priorities.
  • Support follow-up discussions, evaluations, and customer questions throughout the sales process.
  • Assist with customer reference activities, workshops, webinars, and proof-of-concept presentations as needed.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Product Management, Marketing, Customer Success, and Subject Matter Experts to improve demo effectiveness and customer engagement.
  • Share competitive intelligence, customer feedback, common objections, and market trends with internal teams.
  • Contribute to demo scripts, presentation assets, sales tools, and best practices.
  • Represent Harris Govern at conferences, trade shows, webinars, and industry events.

Required Qualifications

  • Exceptional presentation, communication, and storytelling skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver engaging software demonstrations, solution presentations, workshops, or customer-facing sessions.
  • Strong consultative sales aptitude and ability to connect product functionality to business outcomes.
  • Ability to quickly establish credibility and build trust with customers.
  • Strong skills at creating and developing AI based processes.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated, coachable, and comfortable working in a collaborative, growth-focused sales environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote-first organization.
  • Willingness to travel periodically for customer meetings, demonstrations, conferences, and industry events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Use of AI to rapidly tailor demonstrations, generate customer-specific scenarios, summarize discovery sessions, anticipate customer questions, and continuously improve demo effectiveness.
  • Experience in property tax administration, assessment, appraisal, valuation, CAMA, tax collection, or local government operations.
  • Experience in software demonstrations, pre-sales support, solution consulting, sales engineering, SaaS sales, or customer-facing software roles.
  • Familiarity with mass appraisal concepts, valuation workflows, and assessment operations.
  • IAAO certifications (CAE, RES, PPS, or similar credentials) are a plus.
  • Experience supporting public-sector software evaluations, procurements, or RFP processes.
  • Familiarity with CRM platforms, virtual demonstration tools, and remote presentation technologies.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys being in front of customers and thrives in a presentation-focused role.
  • Understands that a great demo is a sales conversation, not a software training session.
  • Can quickly identify customer priorities and adapt demonstrations to what matters most.
  • Naturally connects product capabilities to measurable customer value.
  • Possesses curiosity, coachability, and a passion for helping customers solve complex challenges.
  • Wants to build a long-term career in sales, solution consulting, or customer-facing technology advisory roles.
