Tax Practice Operations Manager

Start Date: January, 2027

Strategic Tax & Accounting, LLC | Birmingham, Alabama

Full-Time | In-Office | $50,000 to $75,000 + Bonus and Benefits

Strategic Tax & Accounting, LLC, a 2026 Quantum Certified Workplace and two-time Birmingham Business Journal Best Place to Work (2025 and 2026), is hiring a Tax Practice Operations Manager to run the systems that move roughly 2,000 client tax engagements from intake through preparation, review, filing and completion. This full-time, in-office position reports to the COO.

This is not a tax preparation position. An accounting degree and tax preparer experience are not required. You will need a working knowledge of common tax forms (W-2, 1099, K-1, Schedules C, E and F), the tax season calendar, and a genuine interest in building and running internal process systems. You will be the operational air traffic controller of our tax practice, working in Canopy (practice management and CRM) alongside Drake tax software.

What You Will Do

  • Build and improve workflows, templates and automations in Canopy for tax preparation and tax planning engagements
  • Route incoming client documents and track each return through the preparation process
  • Maintain a system identifying files waiting on information versus ready for preparation, and flag stalled engagements
  • Build reports and dashboards tracking engagement status, deadlines and workflow performance
  • Identify bottlenecks, eliminate redundant steps, automate where possible and train the tax team on improvements


Your First Season

Our COO and a Canopy implementation consultant have already mapped our tax preparation workflows and built the client questionnaires, templates and information requests. You will work alongside them to monitor and improve these systems through the April deadline, then help design and launch the workflow for off-season tax planning engagements.

Requirements

  • Strong technology, analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage complex processes involving many clients, team members and hard deadlines
  • Ability to work extended hours January through April and September through October


Strongly Preferred

  • Experience in a CPA firm, tax office or other professional services environment
  • Experience with Canopy, Karbon, TaxDome or similar practice management software
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, MIS, Operations or Finance, plus 3+ years of relevant experience or an MBA


Compensation and Benefits

Base salary of $50,000 to $75,000 based on experience and qualifications, with the upper range for candidates with tax office management experience, Canopy (or similar) experience, or an MBA. Benefits include:
