What is the difference between Tanker Engineer vs Marine Engineer?

AspectTanker EngineerMarine Engineer
CertificationsSTCW Basic Safety, Tanker-specific certificationsSTCW Basic Safety, Marine Engineering certifications
Work EnvironmentOnboard oil/tanker ships, focusing on cargo systemsOnboard various ships, including cargo, passenger, and cargo ships
Industry UsagePrimarily in oil, chemical, and product tanker industriesBroader maritime industry, including cargo ships, cruise ships, and ferries

While both Tanker Engineers and Marine Engineers work onboard ships and require similar certifications, Tanker Engineers specialize in the maintenance and operation of cargo and oil tank systems on tankers. Marine Engineers have a broader role across various vessel types, focusing on overall ship machinery. The choice depends on whether you prefer working specifically with tankers or a wider range of ships within the maritime industry.

Participate in design trades and sign off on key decisions on how hardware is made.
  • Design, build and activate factory production cells. Own factory layouts including material movement, build process flows, lifting and rigging solutions, and facilities requirements
  • Optimize and accelerate existing manufacturing processes for tank integration & supporting structures
  • Work directly with machinists, welders & technicians to produce hardware that meets all technical requirements. Ideate and execute on projects to improve the technicians’ experience and provide design for manufacturability feedback based on technician feedback.
  • Provide technical guidance to outside vendors and support supply chain development
  • Update designs, manufacturing processes, and documentation to support continuous improvement
