What is a tanker driver for recent graduates?

Tanker Drivers are professional truck drivers who operate vehicles designed to transport liquids or gases in large tanks, such as fuel, chemicals, or food-grade products. For recent graduates, this role typically involves completing specialized training to safely handle hazardous or sensitive materials, obtaining necessary licenses like a CDL with tanker and possibly hazardous materials endorsements, and learning industry regulations. It's a career that offers steady employment, opportunities for travel, and competitive pay, but requires attention to safety and compliance. Entry-level tanker driving positions often provide on-the-job training and mentorship to help new graduates transition into the field.

What are some common challenges recent graduates may face when starting as a tanker driver, and how can they overcome them?

Recent graduates entering the role of Tanker Driver often face challenges such as adapting to long hours on the road, mastering the safe handling of hazardous materials, and understanding complex regulations. New drivers can overcome these challenges by taking advantage of thorough company training programs, seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues, and staying up-to-date with industry safety practices. Building strong communication skills is also essential, as Tanker Drivers regularly coordinate with dispatchers, clients, and maintenance teams to ensure timely and safe deliveries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tanker driver for recent graduates?

To thrive as a Tanker Driver, recent graduates need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, strong knowledge of safety regulations, and basic mechanical skills. Familiarity with tanker-specific vehicles, GPS navigation systems, and electronic logging devices (ELDs) is typically required, along with certifications such as HAZMAT if transporting hazardous materials. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong communication skills are crucial for safely managing cargo and interacting with clients and dispatchers. These competencies ensure legal compliance, safe transport of materials, and effective communication—vital for both safety and efficiency in the role.

Job description

About the role: Start your driving career with a position designed for recent CDL A holders. 365 Freight USA is hiring recent graduates and newly licensed CDL A drivers for a paid 4–6 week mentor training program based in Alexandria, VA. You will ride and work alongside an experienced driver, learn the day-to-day flow of professional trucking, and then transition into solo driving. After training, drivers can earn $1,600–$1,800 weekly with full benefits.

What we offer:

  • Paid training throughout the 4–6 week mentor period.
  • Weekly pay of $1,600–$1,800 after training; direct deposit available.
  • Full benefits available following completion of training.
  • A structured entry opportunity for recent CDL A graduates moving from classroom instruction to real-world driving.
  • Practical, on-the-road guidance from an experienced mentor prior to taking on solo driving responsibilities.

What you'll be doing:

  • Complete a 4–6 week paid mentor training period that includes learning daily driving routines, working with an experienced driver, and preparing to transition into solo operations.
  • Drive with your mentor while assisting with pickups and deliveries and learning how to manage loads safely and efficiently.
  • Follow safe driving practices, complete required vehicle and cargo checks, and build professional habits for over-the-road operations.
  • Gain hands-on experience with trip flow, communication, and operational decision-making as you progress from a recent graduate to an independent driver.
  • Operate primarily out of the Alexandria, VA area and on assigned routes consistent with company operations.

What we're looking for:

  • Safety-first mindset: consistently follow DOT regulations, company procedures, and safe driving practices.
  • Reliability: attend scheduled training, meet timing expectations, and perform responsibilities consistently during training and after going solo.
  • Coachability: accept and apply feedback from your mentor; demonstrate a willingness to learn through on-road instruction.
  • Strong communication: maintain contact with your mentor and dispatch, ask questions when needed, and communicate clearly with colleagues and customers as appropriate.
  • Recent CDL A graduates and newly licensed CDL A drivers are encouraged to apply.
