What is a Tableau developer?

Tableau Developers are professionals who specialize in creating, managing, and optimizing data visualizations using Tableau software. They work with data sources to design interactive dashboards and reports that help organizations analyze and interpret complex data. Tableau Developers often collaborate with business stakeholders to understand reporting needs and ensure that data insights are accessible, actionable, and visually compelling.

What does a Tableau developer do?

Tableau software collects and translates large amounts of data into easy-to-read, interactive platforms. These platforms enable businesses to analyze and interpret results from various aspects of their company. Tableau developers are specialized programmers who create tailored reports that assist companies in meeting their goals. These programmers understand the importance of the ETL (extract, transform, load) process of transferring data from the primary source to a new location and know how to organize and use that data in productive ways.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tableau developer?

To thrive as a Tableau Developer, you need strong skills in data analysis, visualization, and proficiency with SQL, often supported by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Familiarity with Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, and certification such as Tableau Desktop Specialist are commonly required, along with experience in data warehousing and ETL processes. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you translate business requirements into actionable, insightful dashboards. These skills ensure the delivery of meaningful, accurate visualizations that drive data-informed decision-making in organizations.

What are some common challenges Tableau developers face when working with large datasets, and how can they address them?

Tableau Developers often encounter performance issues when visualizing large datasets, such as slow dashboard loading times and laggy interactivity. To address these challenges, developers can optimize data extracts, use efficient calculations, and limit the number of visualizations on a single dashboard. Collaborating closely with data engineers to ensure proper data modeling and leveraging Tableau's built-in performance optimization tools are also key strategies. Staying proactive about these challenges helps deliver fast, interactive, and insightful dashboards to stakeholders.

What is the difference between Tableau Developer vs Data Analyst?

AspectTableau DeveloperData Analyst
Primary FocusDesigning and developing Tableau dashboards and visualizationsAnalyzing data sets to identify trends and insights

While both roles involve working with data, Tableau Developers focus on creating visual dashboards using Tableau, whereas Data Analysts analyze data to generate insights. The roles often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in emphasis on visualization versus analysis.

Are Tableau Developers in demand?

Tableau Developers are in high demand due to the increasing need for data visualization and business intelligence solutions across industries. Employers seek professionals skilled in Tableau, data analysis, and dashboard creation to support data-driven decision-making. The role often requires familiarity with SQL, data modeling, and certifications to enhance job prospects.

How much do Tableau Developers make?

Tableau Developers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with advanced skills in data visualization and SQL can command higher salaries, especially with certifications and extensive project experience.

Job description

Role Overview

Feastables is building a modern CPG brand at scale, where data is critical to how the business plans, operates, and grows. This role sits at the center of that effort, enabling Supply Chain, Finance, and Commercial teams to make decisions using accurate, reliable, and scalable analytics.

The Senior Analytics Engineer is responsible for building and maintaining the core data workflows that support demand planning, supply pacing, and business performance tracking. This role translates complex business processes into structured, production-ready data systems that teams rely on daily.

The Role

This is a senior individual contributor role with end-to-end ownership of analytics systems. The role owns ingestion, transformation, and visualization of critical datasets across Databricks and Tableau, supporting core business functions including Supply Chain, Finance, and Commercial operations.

The role operates independently, makes technical decisions, and sets standards for analytics engineering within the Feastables domain. While there is no people management, the role requires strong ownership, cross-functional partnership, and responsibility for systems that are critical to company operations.

What You'll Do
  • Own end-to-end ingestion of Feastables' demand plan into Databricks and Tableau
  • Maintain and improve demand cascade logic from customer-level to retailer-level
  • Manage unit conversions and product mappings across finished goods, cases, pallets, and materials
  • Ensure demand data is accurate, timely, and consumable by downstream supply chain tools
  • Design, build, and maintain data pipelines in Databricks using Python and SQL
  • Manage ingestion from multiple sources including retailer APIs (Walmart, Target, Kroger), ERP systems (NetSuite), and Azure Blob Storage file drops
  • Own data table design, transformations, and performance optimization at scale (~2M records/day)
  • Improve reliability, documentation, and resilience of data pipelines
  • Build and maintain Tableau dashboards for financial pacing, forecast vs actuals, POS performance, supply chain scorecards, MRP, and COGS/margin analysis
  • Ensure dashboards are accurate, performant, well-documented, and trusted as a source of truth
  • Design clean, well-modeled datasets to support self-service analytics
  • Own quarterly Fair Trade reporting, including sales data extraction and enrichment with country-of-origin and royalty attributes
  • Ensure reporting outputs are accurate, auditable, and delivered on schedule
  • Set best practices for analytics engineering, documentation, and data quality
  • Partner with data leaders across the company on standards, tooling, and architecture
  • Identify opportunities to simplify workflows, improve cost efficiency, and modernize the data stack
What You'll Bring
  • 6+ years of experience in analytics engineering, data analytics, or BI roles
  • Strong hands-on experience with SQL, DBT, Python, and Tableau
  • Experience working with cloud data platforms, with Databricks strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to own end-to-end analytics systems from ingestion through executive dashboards
  • Experience supporting CPG, retail, supply chain, or manufacturing analytics
  • Experience working with imperfect data and evolving business processes
  • Experience with Azure and GCP, including Blob Storage, Data Factory, or BigQuery
  • Experience with POS data, retailer APIs, and ERP systems such as NetSuite
  • Familiarity with MRP, demand planning, or inventory management concepts
  • Experience operating at scale with high-volume datasets
