What is a Tableau developer?

Tableau Developers are professionals who specialize in creating, managing, and optimizing data visualizations using Tableau software. They work with data sources to design interactive dashboards and reports that help organizations analyze and interpret complex data. Tableau Developers often collaborate with business stakeholders to understand reporting needs and ensure that data insights are accessible, actionable, and visually compelling.

What does a Tableau developer do?

Tableau software collects and translates large amounts of data into easy-to-read, interactive platforms. These platforms enable businesses to analyze and interpret results from various aspects of their company. Tableau developers are specialized programmers who create tailored reports that assist companies in meeting their goals. These programmers understand the importance of the ETL (extract, transform, load) process of transferring data from the primary source to a new location and know how to organize and use that data in productive ways.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tableau developer?

To thrive as a Tableau Developer, you need strong skills in data analysis, visualization, and proficiency with SQL, often supported by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Familiarity with Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, and certification such as Tableau Desktop Specialist are commonly required, along with experience in data warehousing and ETL processes. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you translate business requirements into actionable, insightful dashboards. These skills ensure the delivery of meaningful, accurate visualizations that drive data-informed decision-making in organizations.

What are some common challenges Tableau developers face when working with large datasets, and how can they address them?

Tableau Developers often encounter performance issues when visualizing large datasets, such as slow dashboard loading times and laggy interactivity. To address these challenges, developers can optimize data extracts, use efficient calculations, and limit the number of visualizations on a single dashboard. Collaborating closely with data engineers to ensure proper data modeling and leveraging Tableau's built-in performance optimization tools are also key strategies. Staying proactive about these challenges helps deliver fast, interactive, and insightful dashboards to stakeholders.

What is the difference between Tableau Developer vs Data Analyst?

AspectTableau DeveloperData Analyst
Primary FocusDesigning and developing Tableau dashboards and visualizationsAnalyzing data sets to identify trends and insights
Skills & CertificationsProficiency in Tableau, SQL, data modeling, and visualization toolsStrong Excel, SQL, statistical analysis, and data interpretation skills
Work EnvironmentOften part of BI or data teams, working closely with developers and business usersCollaborates across departments to interpret data and support decision-making
Industry UsageCommon in finance, healthcare, retail, and tech sectorsWidely used across industries for data-driven insights

While both roles involve working with data, Tableau Developers focus on creating visual dashboards using Tableau, whereas Data Analysts analyze data to generate insights. The roles often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in emphasis on visualization versus analysis.

Are Tableau Developers in demand?

Tableau Developers are in high demand due to the increasing need for data visualization and business intelligence solutions across industries. Employers seek professionals skilled in Tableau, data analysis, and dashboard creation to support data-driven decision-making. The role often requires familiarity with SQL, data modeling, and certifications to enhance job prospects.

How much do Tableau Developers make?

Tableau Developers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with advanced skills in data visualization and SQL can command higher salaries, especially with certifications and extensive project experience.

Dashboard Developer, PMO

AFL DATA CENTER SERVICES

Remote, U.S.-based. Preference given to candidates located in or near Abilene, TX, Northern Virginia, Dallas, TX or Duncan, SC.

ABOUT AFL

AFL is a global manufacturer of fiber optic and electrical infrastructure solutions, wholly owned by Fujikura, a technology leader founded in 1885. Headquartered in Duncan, SC, AFL supports telecommunications, energy, and data center markets worldwide.

ABOUT AFL DATA CENTER SERVICES

AFL Data Center Services, a division of AFL US Services, delivers large-scale infrastructure solutions supporting some of the world’s largest data center environments.

Our expertise includes network infrastructure deployment, pathway installation, bulk fiber installation, high-volume fiber splicing, interconnect and backbone deployment, testing, certification, and operational support. We thrive in fast-paced environments where precision, execution, quality, and safety matter.

WHY AFL DATA CENTER SERVICES

  • Backed by a financially strong global parent company
  • Rapidly growing Data Center infrastructure services organization
  • Support Big 5 Hyperscalers
  • Deep expertise in large-scale deployment execution
  • Strong safety culture and operational discipline
  • Opportunity to help build the next generation of digital infrastructure

THE OPPORTUNITY

This is a foundational seat in the Analytics and Enablement pillar of a brand new PMO. The Dashboard Developer will build the visibility layer that pulls data from multiple sources, spreadsheets, project plans, operational systems, into a single, executive ready view of project health for internal leaders and external customers.

We are tool agnostic. Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or another platform are all on the table. The right person brings deep visualization craft and the ability to evaluate, recommend, and stand up the right stack for our scale.

WHY THIS ROLE

  • Greenfield seat. There is no existing dashboard layer. You will define the standard.
  • You will lead the platform evaluation and recommendation. The decision is yours to drive.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Lead the platform evaluation and recommendation. Power BI, Tableau, Looker, and adjacent tools are all on the table. We will pick based on your evaluation, not preset constraints.
  • Design and build the PMO dashboard architecture across internal executive views and external customer views
  • Develop and maintain dashboards that surface project health, schedule performance, earned value, and KPI trends
  • Partner with the Senior BI Analyst to turn analytical work into clean, intuitive visualizations
  • Build data pipelines from heterogeneous sources, including spreadsheets, project plans, and operational tools
  • Establish dashboard standards, templates, and version control for use across multiple geographies and customers
  • Train and enable delivery leads on dashboard self-service where appropriate
  • Iterate continuously based on stakeholder feedback to improve clarity, accuracy, and adoption

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Five to eight years of progressive experience in dashboard development, BI engineering, or data visualization
  • Tool agnostic with multi-platform fluency. Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or equivalent. Strong opinions held loosely.
  • Strong SQL and data modeling fundamentals
  • Demonstrated experience building both internal executive dashboards and external customer facing dashboards
  • Portfolio of prior dashboard work available for review during interview process, including at least one example of a customer facing or executive facing dashboard
  • Experience working with messy, heterogeneous source data and standing up clean pipelines
  • Strong eye for visualization design, with the ability to make complex data legible to non-technical stakeholders
  • Hyperscale, data center, EPC, or large infrastructure experience is a plus, not a requirement

TRAVEL AND AUTHORIZATION

  • Travel up to 40 percent for the first 90 days as you connect with operations and project teams, then variable based on project rhythm
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a long-term basis. This position does not offer employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

COMPENSATION

Compensation philosophy, base plus consideration for project performance bonus tied to initiative success measures, quality, safety, schedule, budget, and customer satisfaction. Specific ranges discussed during candidate conversations.

AFL Data Center Services is committed to building a team that reflects the customers and communities we serve. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
