What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Systems Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Systems Reliability Engineer, you need expertise in infrastructure management, automation, and software engineering, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring systems (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana), and relevant cloud certifications (AWS, GCP, or Azure) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a proactive mindset help you prevent and resolve incidents efficiently. These skills ensure systems remain robust, scalable, and highly available, which is critical for maintaining business continuity and user trust.

How does a Systems Reliability Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams to ensure system stability?

Systems Reliability Engineers (SREs) work closely with both development and operations teams to bridge the gap between software engineering and IT operations. They participate in design reviews to ensure reliability is built into new features, coordinate with developers to automate deployments, and work with operations to monitor system health and respond to incidents. By fostering a culture of shared responsibility for uptime and performance, SREs help streamline troubleshooting and drive improvements across the organization. Regular communication and joint post-incident reviews are key practices in this collaborative environment.

What are Systems Reliability Engineers?

Systems Reliability Engineers (SREs) are IT professionals responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, and performance of software systems and infrastructure. They combine software engineering and systems administration skills to automate processes, monitor system health, respond to incidents, and improve system resilience. SREs work closely with development and operations teams to optimize deployment pipelines, manage outages, and implement best practices for scalability and reliability. Their goal is to minimize downtime and ensure a seamless user experience.

What is the difference between Systems Reliability Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectSystems Reliability EngineerDevOps Engineer
Primary FocusEnsuring system reliability, availability, and performanceAutomating deployment, integration, and continuous delivery
Skills & CertificationsSRE certifications, Linux, scripting, monitoring toolsCI/CD tools, cloud platforms, scripting, automation
Work EnvironmentOperations, infrastructure, and reliability teamsDevelopment and operations collaboration
Industry UsageTech, finance, e-commerceTech, startups, cloud services

While both roles focus on improving system performance, Systems Reliability Engineers primarily concentrate on maintaining system uptime and reliability, whereas DevOps Engineers focus on streamlining development and deployment processes. Both roles often collaborate but serve different core functions within an organization.

SRE/Support Developer (Production Engineering)

Wellfit Technologies

Irving, TX • Hybrid

$54.75 - $72.75/hr

Full-time

Posted 5 days ago

Job description

About Wellfit
Wellfit is the dental industry’s leading healthcare fintech platform. We remove financial barriers between patients, providers, employers, and payors—expanding access to care while improving financial transparency and operational efficiency.
As a profitable and rapidly growing company, we are building the infrastructure, tooling, and engineering culture to scale both our platform and our impact.
The Role
We are seeking a highly capable SRE / Support Developer to operate at the intersection of production support, software engineering, and site reliability. This is not a traditional support role.

You will act as a frontline production engineer—investigating critical issues, identifying root causes, implementing fixes or workarounds, and proactively improving system reliability. You’ll partner closely with Platform, DevOps, and Engineering teams while freeing up core developers to focus on product delivery.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, moves quickly under pressure, and takes ownership from problem detection through resolution.
What You’ll Do
Production Incident Response:
• Investigate and triage P1/P2 production issues with urgency and precision
• Perform deep root cause analysis across distributed systems
• Implement immediate fixes or workarounds to restore stability
• Clearly document findings and hand off long-term solutions to engineering teams

System Reliability & Observability:
• Monitor system health using tools like Grafana, logs, and telemetry dashboards
• Identify anomalies and proactively investigate issues before escalation
• Tune alerts and improve signal-to-noise ratio across monitoring systems
• Partner with DevOps/SRE to strengthen reliability practices

Engineering & Tooling:

• Build internal tools, scripts, or small services to improve support and operations workflows
• Contribute to codebases (primarily .NET / Azure environments) where needed
• Help reduce technical debt by addressing recurring production issues

Cross-Functional Communication:
• Translate technical issues into clear, actionable updates for stakeholders
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Customer-facing teams
• Occasionally join calls with internal teams or customers to explain incidents and resolutions

What We’re Looking For:
Core Capabilities
•  Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
•  5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills across backend systems, APIs, and cloud infrastructure
• Experience with production support, incident response, or SRE-like environments
• Ability to own problems end-to-end with minimal direction
• Comfort operating in fast-paced, high-pressure situations (“firefighter mindset”)

Technical Stack

Backend: .NET / C#
Cloud: Microsoft Azure
Frontend familiarity: Angular (nice-to-have, not required)
Observability: Grafana, logging systems, monitoring tools
APIs: RESTful services and distributed system interactions

Mindset & Traits
• Proactive: You investigate signals, not just assigned tickets
• Autonomous: You don’t wait for direction—you drive resolution
• Communicative: You can explain complex issues clearly and professionally
• Builder: You automate and improve systems rather than repeatedly patching

Nice to Have
• Experience working alongside or within SRE / DevOps teams
• Familiarity with incident management processes (postmortems, SLAs, etc.)
• Experience building internal tools or automation workflows
• Exposure to AI-assisted development or modern engineering tooling

Why This Role Matters
• You will play a critical role in stabilizing and scaling Wellfit’s platform—acting as the connective tissue between production reality and engineering execution.
• This is a high-impact opportunity to evolve into a full SRE or platform engineer over time.
Why Wellfit?
• Make an Impact: Your work will directly shape the financial backbone of one of the most innovative healthcare fintech companies in the U.S.
• Work Flexibly: Hybrid model based in Dallas with 3 days/week in-office.
• Comprehensive Benefits: Full medical, dental, vision, and generous PTO.
• Invest in Your Future: Competitive salary, bonus eligibility, and 401(k) matching.
• Fast-Growth Environment: A rare opportunity to grow with a profitable startup on a national trajectory.
Alongside a competitive annual bonus, we offer a 401(k) with up to a 4% match, generous paid time off, and comprehensive healthcare benefits.
