What does a Systems Integration Test Engineer do?

A Systems Integration Test Engineer is responsible for ensuring that different components of a system work together as intended. They design, plan, and execute tests that validate the integration of hardware, software, and network elements in complex systems. Their work helps identify and resolve compatibility or functionality issues before deployment. This role often involves collaborating with development, quality assurance, and engineering teams to ensure system reliability and performance.

What is the difference between Systems Integration Test Engineer vs Software Test Engineer?

AspectSystems Integration Test EngineerSoftware Test Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or Computer Science, certifications like ISTQBBachelor's in Computer Science or related field, ISTQB certification common
Work EnvironmentHardware and software integration labs, manufacturing environmentsSoftware development teams, testing labs, virtual environments
Industry UsageElectronics, aerospace, automotive, telecommunicationsIT, software development, app development
Common Search IntentUnderstanding roles in system integration and testingTesting software applications and features

The main difference is that Systems Integration Test Engineers focus on verifying the integration of hardware and software systems, ensuring components work together seamlessly. Software Test Engineers primarily test software applications for bugs and performance. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in overlapping industries, but their focus areas and environments differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Systems Integration Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Systems Integration Test Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering, software/hardware integration, and testing methodologies, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with test automation tools, scripting languages (such as Python or Bash), and requirements management systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and clear communication skills help you collaborate effectively and troubleshoot complex integration issues. These skills ensure seamless system performance, timely defect identification, and successful deployment of integrated solutions.

What are common challenges faced by Systems Integration Test Engineers during large-scale project deployments?

Systems Integration Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating between multiple teams, managing complex dependencies, and ensuring compatibility among various hardware and software components. Large-scale deployments require robust test planning and adaptability, as unforeseen issues can arise when integrating different systems. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are crucial to address integration bugs quickly and to keep the project timeline on track. Collaborating closely with development, QA, and operations teams helps ensure a smooth integration and successful deployment.

About the Opportunity:
We are looking for people who are testers and have recent experience testing, including writing test cases, scripts, and running them on software and hardware simulators for spacecraft. The manager will pass on candidates that don't have this spacecraft experience writing or executing software verification tests using HWIL/SWIL (software in the loop and hardware in the loop test platforms).
We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative Satellite Systems I&T Engineer - HWIL/SWIL to develop solutions for satellite integration and test. We're looking for candidates who can bring exceptional engineering skills and strong experience in aerospace programs to the team. The Satellite Systems I&T Engineer (SEIT) will contribute to the development and execution of Airbus U.S. satellite verification and validation activities, including Flatsats, HWIL/SWIL environments, and simulators. In this role, the engineer will map technical requirements to verification and validation strategies, develop test plans, procedures, and automated test scripts, and execute and report software, subsystem, and system-level test results. The engineer will also support requirements decomposition and the development of design documentation.
As a mid-level engineer, the SEIT Engineer will lead portions of the verification program, serve as Test Conductor for formal validation events, troubleshoot complex hardware and software issues, and execute moderate to complex assignments with increasing autonomy under the Systems Engineering Manager and senior Systems Engineers.
Why This Opportunity is Exciting:
This role offers the chance to join a company that prioritizes both people and performance-where your contributions directly impact client success while giving you room to grow and develop professionally.
What You'll Do:
Satellite Functional Verification and Validation - 80%
  • Review the satellite functional specification and develop verification plans and test approaches to validate requirements.
  • Design and build automated testing systems, tooling, and/or ground support equipment (GSE) to optimize test and production workflows.
  • Develop, execute, and maintain test procedures and automated scripts for Flatsat, HWIL, and SWIL environments.
  • Serve as a test developer by writing automated TCL-based test scripts for the TERMA CCS5 command-and-control (C2) system.
  • Serve as Test Conductor for formal validation tests and lead dry runs or readiness activities.
  • Troubleshoot complex hardware and software issues, perform detailed data analysis, and generate or review test reports, non-conformances, and closure documentation.
  • Participate in and help coordinate cross-functional planning, integration, and test execution across engineering disciplines.
Satellite System Architecture Development - 20%
  • Support system architecture trade studies and requirements development for mission objectives.
  • Update the satellite functional specification based on new mission or customer requirements.
  • Generate system architecture artifacts such as spacecraft CONOPS, algorithm descriptions, and interface documentation.
