Job description

Systems Engineer

Professional Services / Managed IT Services
Locations: Coopersville, MI 49404 or Cloverdale, IN 46120
Travel: Up to 50%, including some overnight travel

Who Are We?

We’re looking for an experienced Systems Engineer to join a growing Professional Services team supporting a variety of client environments and technology projects.

This is a project-focused engineering role for someone who enjoys taking technical solutions from planning through implementation. Rather than spending the majority of the day working a traditional support queue, you’ll be involved in deploying, migrating, upgrading, and improving infrastructure across server, network, Microsoft cloud, security, backup, and virtualization technologies.

The right person will bring strong technical experience, but just as importantly, will be comfortable working directly with customers, collaborating with other engineers, documenting their work, and taking ownership of their portion of a project from beginning to end.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like in This Role?

As a Systems Engineer, you’ll work as part of a Professional Services team delivering infrastructure and technology projects across a variety of client environments.

Depending on the project, one day might involve configuring a new Windows Server environment or troubleshooting Active Directory and Group Policy issues, while another could involve a Microsoft 365 migration, firewall deployment, virtualization project, network refresh, or implementation of backup and cybersecurity solutions.

You’ll also serve as a technical resource for other engineers participating in project delivery, helping troubleshoot more complex issues, sharing knowledge, and identifying risks or blockers before they impact the project.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Configuring, deploying, and validating client servers, storage, networks, firewalls, and cloud environments.
  • Implementing and configuring Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure solutions, including user administration, Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, and security policies.
  • Working with Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Implementing backup, disaster recovery, and cybersecurity solutions.
  • Supporting and troubleshooting virtualization platforms such as VMware, Nutanix, Hyper-V, Scale Computing, and similar technologies.
  • Configuring and troubleshooting network infrastructure including firewalls, switches, VPNs, VLANs, and routing.
  • Performing system upgrades, migrations, replacements, and configuration changes.
  • Participating in or leading client onboarding, infrastructure refresh, deployment, migration, and assessment projects.
  • Identifying and escalating technical risks, project blockers, and implementation concerns.
  • Mentoring and supporting associate or junior engineers during project execution.
  • Documenting technical configurations, deployment procedures, and client environment information for operational handoff.
  • Accurately tracking project work and time within the PSA platform.
  • Working directly with clients in a professional and consultative manner throughout project delivery.
Schedule & Work Environment

This is a full-time, exempt Systems Engineer position within a Professional Services environment.

The position is based out of either Coopersville, Michigan or Cloverdale, Indiana and includes client-site project work. Travel of up to approximately 50% may be required, including some overnight travel.

Certain migrations, infrastructure changes, and production cutovers may also need to be performed outside normal business hours to minimize disruption to client operations.

What Qualifications or Experience Do I Need?

We’re looking for someone with a well-rounded infrastructure background who can confidently work across multiple technologies rather than specializing in only one area.

You should have:

  • Approximately 5–7 years of professional IT experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 and working with Microsoft Azure/cloud services.
  • Hands-on networking experience involving firewalls, switches, VPNs, VLANs, and routing.
  • Experience with server and workstation operating systems and general infrastructure technologies.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix, Scale Computing, or comparable platforms.
  • Familiarity with backup and disaster recovery platforms such as Veeam, Datto, or similar solutions.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity practices and technologies including EDR, MFA, and common compliance/security frameworks.
  • Experience with RMM and PSA platforms such as ConnectWise, Kaseya, N-able, or similar tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • The ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with other engineers.
  • The confidence and professionalism to work directly with clients.
  • The ability and willingness to mentor less-experienced engineers and share technical knowledge.

A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience, is preferred.

Previous experience working within a Managed Service Provider (MSP) environment is preferred, but strong infrastructure, consulting, or professional-services experience will also be considered.

Certifications

Industry certifications are preferred but are not necessarily required for an otherwise well-qualified candidate.

Relevant certifications may include:

  • CompTIA Network+
  • CompTIA Security+
  • Microsoft / Microsoft 365 certifications
  • VMware certifications
  • Cisco certifications
  • Other infrastructure, networking, cloud, or cybersecurity certifications

Additional technical accreditations related to the company’s core technology offerings may be required after hire.

Benefits

This opportunity includes a comprehensive benefits package featuring:

  • Multiple medical insurance plan options
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Employer-paid Group Term Life and AD&D insurance
  • Employer-paid Short-Term Disability
  • Employer-paid Long-Term Disability
  • Optional supplemental and voluntary life insurance
  • 401(k) with a 100% employer match on employee contributions up to 6% of compensation
  • Paid time off
  • 11 paid holidays per calendar year
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Employee wellness resources
  • Tuition reimbursement opportunities after one year of service
  • Additional employee discount and wellness programs

Health insurance benefits begin on the first day of employment.
