A Systems Architect Intern assists in designing, analyzing, and optimizing an organization’s computer systems and networks. They work under the guidance of senior architects to help develop system solutions, document processes, and ensure that IT infrastructure aligns with business goals. Interns may participate in meetings, research new technologies, and support the creation of system diagrams or architecture documentation. This role provides hands-on experience in both hardware and software aspects of system design, preparing interns for advanced careers in IT architecture.

What types of projects and team collaborations can a Systems Architect Intern expect during their internship?

As a Systems Architect Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects such as helping design, document, and optimize system architectures under the guidance of senior architects. You'll often collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software developers, network engineers, and project managers, to ensure proposed solutions meet both technical and business requirements. Interns frequently assist with researching emerging technologies, preparing system diagrams, and participating in design reviews, giving them exposure to the full lifecycle of architectural planning. This collaborative environment not only builds technical skills but also enhances your ability to communicate complex ideas across teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Systems Architect Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Systems Architect Intern, you need a foundation in computer science, systems design, and networking concepts, often demonstrated through coursework or relevant technical internships. Enlighten, honored as a Top Workplace from USA Today, is a leader in big data solution development and deployment, with expertise in cloud-based services, software and systems engineering, cyber capabilities, and data science. Enlighten provides continued innovation and proactivity in meeting our customers' greatest challenges.
We recognize that the most effective environment for your projects doesn't always look the same. Job Description
This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. Enlighten Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with Enlighten.
Essential Job Responsibilities
The SkillBridge intern will train as a DevOps Engineer with Enlighten, reporting to a designated Enlighten Supervisor, with the goal of learning Enlighten's Enterprise approach to design, build, and optimize Joint Cyber Warfighter Architecture (JCWA) Common Runtime Stack for Data (JCRS-D) systems for automated deployments, scalable infrastructure, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.
Desired End State (3-4 month target)

    • Manage and configure Linux-based systems using Bash.
    • Develop automation scripts using Python to streamline operational tasks.
    • Provision and manage cloud infrastructure using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS).
    • Orchestrate and deploy containerized applications using Kubernetes.
    • Develop and manage Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
    • Identify ways to improve system reliability, deployment efficiency, and code quality.
    • Use data and operational metrics to discover tasks that can be automated.
  • Enlighten will benefit from the military background of the SkillBridge intern and considers the SkillBridge internship an overall positive experience.
