Job description

Operating Room Technical Coordinator

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as an Operating Room Technical Coordinator. In this role, you will support perioperative operations by coordinating technical activities within designated surgical service lines while collaborating with surgeons, nurses, surgical technologists, anesthesiologists, sterile processing professionals, and vendors to ensure safe, efficient, and seamless patient care.

The Operating Room Technical Coordinator reports directly to Operating Room Leadership and serves as a key resource for specialty service line operations. This position is responsible for coordinating technical activities including procedure setup and breakdown, troubleshooting equipment, asset management, and specialty equipment support. Working closely with interdisciplinary teams, the coordinator helps ensure that operating rooms are prepared, equipment is available and functioning properly, and procedures are supported according to established standards and best practices.

The coordinator plays an important role in maintaining operational excellence by supporting quality improvement initiatives, monitoring equipment utilization, developing standardized workflows, and promoting regulatory compliance. This position serves as a liaison between clinical teams, Sterile Processing, vendors, and leadership to support equipment readiness, optimize specialty services, and enhance patient outcomes. In addition, the coordinator provides education and coaching to staff regarding proper equipment handling and maintenance while fostering a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

โ€ข Coordinate technical support activities within assigned surgical specialties, including procedure setup, breakdown, equipment troubleshooting, and asset coverage.

โ€ข Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, surgical technologists, anesthesiologists, Sterile Processing professionals, and vendors to support safe and efficient operating room workflows.

โ€ข Ensure specialty equipment and instruments are maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.

โ€ข Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, equipment utilization, and sustainability.

โ€ข Develop service coverage plans and coordinate specialty equipment resources to support procedural needs.

โ€ข Establish, document, and promote best practices and standardized workflows across assigned specialty areas.

โ€ข Serve as a liaison with Sterile Processing to ensure proper care, maintenance, and availability of instruments and equipment.

โ€ข Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate timely resolution utilizing available institutional resources.

โ€ข Support quality improvement initiatives, research protocols, and specialty procedures as needed.

โ€ข Provide coaching, education, and guidance to staff regarding the proper handling, maintenance, and utilization of instruments and equipment.

โ€ข Conduct audits to support compliance and operational excellence and provide feedback to improve performance.

โ€ข Participate in departmental meetings, educational initiatives, and performance improvement activities.

โ€ข Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

โ€ข Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.

โ€ข Current Surgical Technologist Certification.

โ€ข Current CPR certification.

โ€ข Minimum five (5) years of clinical practice experience in an operating room setting.

โ€ข Minimum two (2) years of experience within a designated surgical specialty area.

โ€ข Demonstrated knowledge of operating room instrumentation, equipment, and surgical workflows.

โ€ข Strong problem-solving, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

โ€ข Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.

โ€ข Ability to obtain Sterile Processing Certification within eighteen (18) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

โ€ข Bachelor's degree.

โ€ข Prior leadership, coordination, or project management experience in a perioperative environment.

โ€ข Experience supporting quality improvement, process improvement, or equipment management initiatives.
