What is system integration?

System integration is the process of connecting different computing systems and software applications physically or functionally, to work together as a coordinated whole. This involves combining hardware devices, software programs, and communication networks so that they operate seamlessly and exchange data efficiently. System integration helps organizations streamline workflows, improve efficiency, and reduce operational costs by ensuring that all parts of their IT environment communicate effectively. Integrators may use various methods and tools depending on the complexity and requirements of the systems involved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system integration specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Integration Specialist, you need strong knowledge of software development, systems architecture, and troubleshooting, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with integration platforms (like MuleSoft or Dell Boomi), API protocols, and relevant certifications such as CompTIA or Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and adaptability help in collaborating with cross-functional teams and addressing complex integration challenges. These skills ensure seamless connectivity between diverse systems, supporting efficient business operations and minimizing downtime.

What are the common challenges faced by professionals in system integration roles, and how can they be addressed?

System Integration professionals often encounter challenges such as integrating legacy systems with modern technologies, ensuring data consistency across platforms, and managing communication between diverse software and hardware components. To address these challenges, it is important to thoroughly document system requirements, maintain clear communication with stakeholders, and follow best practices for testing and validation. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, such as software developers, network engineers, and project managers, is also crucial to ensure seamless integration and timely resolution of issues.

What is the difference between System Integration vs Network Engineer?

AspectSystem IntegrationNetwork Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in computer science or engineering, certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+Similar credentials, often with Cisco certifications and network-specific training
Work EnvironmentWorks on integrating hardware and software systems across various platformsFocuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining network infrastructure
Industry UsageUsed across IT, manufacturing, and technology sectors for system deploymentPrimarily in telecommunications, IT, and enterprise network setups

While both roles require technical certifications and involve working with hardware and software, System Integration specialists focus on combining different systems into a cohesive whole, whereas Network Engineers specialize in designing and managing network infrastructure. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job focus.

What does a system integration do?

A system integration professional designs and implements solutions to connect different software applications, hardware devices, and systems to work together seamlessly. They analyze requirements, develop interfaces, and troubleshoot issues using tools like APIs and middleware to ensure efficient data flow and system functionality.

What does system integration work?

System integration work involves combining different software, hardware, and network components to function as a unified system. It requires understanding technical specifications, troubleshooting issues, and often using tools like APIs and middleware to ensure seamless communication between systems.

What skills are needed for system integration?

System integration professionals need strong technical skills in areas such as networking, software development, and hardware configuration. They should be proficient with integration tools, scripting languages, and have a good understanding of system architecture and protocols. Job description

Integration Engineer

A3 Technology, Inc. is seeking experienced Integration Engineers to serve as a technical lead and mentor for the West Service Area field team, providing technical guidance and oversight while remaining actively engaged in hands-on technical work. The position supports the physical and logical integration of fiber-optic and IP-based circuits and coordinates technical activities associated with transitioning legacy copper and Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) systems to modern fiber and IP network infrastructure across the National Airspace System (NAS).

This position will be filled in each of the following locations: Peachtree City, GA; Dallasโ€“Fort Worth, TX; Salt Lake City, UT; Seattle, WA; and Kansas City, MO.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead technical integration: Lead the integration, implementation, and testing of systems supporting the National Airspace System (NAS). Provide technical direction to field teams and take ownership of assigned technical and project activities.
  • Lead legacy-to-IP migrations: Manage technical activities throughout the network infrastructure lifecycle, from planning and site preparation through implementation and final deployment. Direct the migration of legacy TDM circuits to IP-based infrastructure, including circuit activation, cutover coordination, troubleshooting, and performance testing.
  • Provide hands-on infrastructure support: Perform hands-on configuration, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure, protocols, servers, and related hardware. Resolve complex technical issues encountered during deployments across multiple sites and geographic areas.
  • Monitor and analyze system performance: Use operational dashboards, key performance indicators (KPIs), test results, and technical reports to evaluate network performance. Verify that fiber and IP infrastructure meets established reliability, availability, resilience, and performance requirements for mission-critical aviation services.
  • Identify and resolve technical risks: Analyze operational and technical data to identify trends, emerging issues, dependencies, and potential performance risks. Develop and recommend corrective actions to maintain successful implementation and operational performance.
  • Communicate technical status and results: Develop and deliver clear, actionable status reports, dashboards, technical documentation, and briefings for project stakeholders and senior leadership. Communicate accomplishments, risks, technical issues, and recommended next steps to support timely decision-making.

Skills Required:

  • College degree or technical certification in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, Telecommunications, or a related discipline (or equivalent military or field experience).
  • Minimum 7 years of hands-on experience in telecommunications network engineering, circuit integration, or infrastructure planning.
  • Deep technical command of BGP, TCP/IP, MPLS, and IPv6, specifically telecommunications infrastructure for TDM-to-IP conversion.
  • Hands-on experience with optical networking (fiber), telecom network infrastructure hardware, server-level deployments, testing, validation and acceptance.
  • Proven ability to model network growth and optimize capacity during large-scale system upgrades.
  • Telecommunications infrastructure experience with ground networks, air to ground systems and technologies.
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Skills Preferred:

  • Experience leading the technical integration side of large infrastructure initiatives; ability to apply project management methodologies to ensure delivery, compliance, and mission alignment.
  • Working knowledge of cloud networking across AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to support hybrid NAS environments.
  • Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with FAA BNATCS protocols or similar mission-critical government network standards.

Work Environment & Travel

  • Work is primarily performed on-site at FAA facilities across the NAS, with additional work at contractor or integrator facilities as required.
  • Position requires regional travel to FAA sites in support of surveys and installation.

Additionally, US Citizenship or documented proof of eligibility to work in the US is a must. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, candidates will undergo a Government investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for Government clearance. Verification of past employment, education and references is also required. It is imperative that candidates be either a US citizen or a current green card holder with the last 3 consecutive years as a resident of the US.

The salary range for positions is $50,000 to $175,000. This range is provided as a general guideline and should not be interpreted as a guarantee of compensation. Actual salary offers will be determined based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to the specific responsibilities of the position, the candidate's education, experience, location, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
