ABOUT THE POSITION
The Department of Waste Resources is seeking three motivated and detail-oriented engineering interns to support the Engineering/Operations or Environmental Engineering team with technical project work, field activities, and data analysis. The intern will gain hands-on experience working with real-world engineering systems, participating in multi-disciplinary projects, and contributing directly to operational improvements. This role is ideal for students pursuing degrees in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or related engineering disciplines who want exposure to engineering design, project management, field investigations, and regulatory compliance work.
The intern should expect to gain exposure to a typical municipal engineering workplace. This professional workplace will include work with engineering and non-engineering co-workers. The intern will experience the variety of engineering work and projects that can be expected in a landfill planning, operation, and maintenance organization.
The in-person student internship position offers a flexible work week consisting of approximately 20 hours per week, with flexibility granted around academic obligations. The selected candidates can anticipate the internship to be one year in length.
Incumbents within the Temporary Assistant - Professional Student Intern classification are distinguished from regular County employees in that their employment is temporary, exempt from the County merit system, Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) as well as most County-provided employee benefits, and serve in an "At-Will" status. As such, the incumbent may be terminated from service at any time, without notice, cause, or rights of appeal.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Under supervision, assists and participates in the work performed by employees of a specific profession; through participation, receives supervised work experience in a specific professional vocation; and performs other related duties as required.
  • Assist engineers with design calculations, drafting, and preparation of technical drawings.
  • Support development of engineering reports, specifications, and construction documentation.
  • Help research and evaluate engineering alternatives.

Field Work & Data Collection
  • Participate in site visits, inspections, surveying, sampling, and system performance evaluations.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze field and operational data.
  • Assist with equipment testing, troubleshooting, and documentation of findings.

Technical Analysis
  • Perform engineering calculations under supervision.
  • Analyze trends in operational data, monitoring results, and system performance metrics.
  • Prepare charts, spreadsheets, and summaries for engineering review.

Documentation & Compliance
  • Assist in preparing permit support materials, drawings, and submittal packages.
  • Support quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) efforts on engineering deliverables.
  • Maintain accurate project files, logs, and documentation.

Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including operations, environmental compliance, and consultants.
  • Present findings in clear written and verbal formats.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average: 2.5 GPA required. Proof of most current unofficial/official transcript with cumulative GPA must be provided at the time of application.
Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled/attending school at an accredited college or university in a Bachelor's degree program (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior) or preparing to transfer to a Bachelor's program during the duration of the internship.
