What is system dynamics?

A System Dynamics job involves using modeling and simulation techniques to analyze complex systems and predict how they evolve over time. Professionals in this field apply feedback loops, stock-and-flow structures, and computational tools to address challenges in business, policy, healthcare, engineering, and environmental systems. These roles are often found in consulting, research, government, and corporate strategy, where decision-makers rely on dynamic models for long-term planning and optimization. Strong skills in mathematics, systems thinking, programming, and data analysis are essential for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in system dynamics?

To thrive in System Dynamics, you need a strong background in systems thinking, mathematical modeling, and analytical problem-solving, often supported by a degree in engineering, mathematics, or a related field. Proficiency in simulation software such as Vensim or Stella, and familiarity with data analysis tools like MATLAB or R, are typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and the ability to translate complex models into actionable insights are crucial soft skills. These abilities enable professionals to design, analyze, and optimize dynamic systems effectively across sectors like business, engineering, or environmental management.

What does a system dynamics professional do?

Professionals in System Dynamics spend most of their time developing and analyzing models that represent complex systems such as supply chains, business processes, or environmental systems. Daily responsibilities often include gathering and structuring data, creating simulation models, running scenario analyses, and interpreting results to support decision-making. This role will be responsible for defining end-to-end manufacturing solutions across a complex, multi-ERP landscape, including the transition of acquired manufacturing businesses onto D365. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in discrete and/or process manufacturing, strong functional knowledge of D365, and the ability to partner across business and IT to deliver scalable, standardized solutions.

This is a hands-on architecture role requiring both strategic thinking and execution, with close collaboration across ERP, MES, integration, and data teams.

Key Responsibilities

Solution Architecture & Design

  • Lead the design of end-to-end manufacturing processes in D365, including:
    • Plan to Produce (MPS/MRP)
    • Production Control (discrete and/or process manufacturing)
    • Shop floor execution
    • Inventory and warehouse integration
  • Define scalable solutions for multi-site, multi-entity manufacturing operations
  • Translate business requirements into solution designs, functional specifications, and architecture artifacts
  • Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture standards and long-term ERP strategy

ERP + MES Integration

  • Partner with technical architects to define integration between D365 and MES systems (e.g., shop floor systems, work instructions, data collection)
  • Define system-of-record boundaries (ERP vs MES vs LIMS)
  • Support design of:
    • Production order integration
    • Inventory synchronization
    • Quality and traceability flows

Global Standardization & Transformation

  • Drive process standardization across acquired entities transitioning from legacy ERPs (e.g., AX, Business Central, QAD, WinBiz, etc.)
  • Identify opportunities to reduce customization and promote out-of-the-box D365 capabilities
  • Contribute to the 5-year ERP + MES transformation roadmap

Implementation Leadership

  • Act as the functional lead during D365 implementations:
    • Guide configuration decisions
    • Support design workshops and fit/gap analysis
    • Oversee functional testing and validation
  • Partner with system integrators and internal teams to ensure high-quality delivery

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with:
    • Operations / Manufacturing leadership
    • Supply chain, quality, and finance teams
    • Technical architects, developers, and integration teams
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the business on manufacturing system capabilities and best practices

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in ERP solution architecture or functional leadership roles
  • Deep expertise in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O) manufacturing modules:
    • Production Control
    • Master Planning (MRP/MPS)
    • Inventory Management
  • Proven experience in manufacturing environments (life sciences, medical device, or regulated industries preferred)
  • Experience supporting or integrating with MES systems
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Discrete and/or process manufacturing
    • Supply chain and inventory flows
    • Shop floor execution processes
  • Experience with multi-entity, global ERP implementations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in ERP consolidation or post-acquisition integration
  • Familiarity with Azure integration patterns (Logic Apps, Service Bus, APIs)
  • Exposure to LIMS, quality systems, or regulated manufacturing environments (GxP)
  • Experience working with Power Platform (Power BI, Power Apps) for manufacturing insights
  • Microsoft certifications in D365 F&O (a plus)

Key Competencies

  • Strong business process acumen in manufacturing operations
  • Ability to bridge business and technical teams
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Strategic mindset with a hands-on, execution-oriented approach
  • Proven ability to operate in complex, global environments

Success Measures

  • Successful delivery of manufacturing capabilities within D365 implementations
  • Reduction in process variability across manufacturing sites
  • Seamless integration between ERP and MES systems
  • Adoption of standardized, scalable manufacturing processes
