System Control information

What is a system control?

System Control jobs involve monitoring, managing, and maintaining the reliable operation of complex systems, such as electrical grids, water distribution networks, or industrial processes. Professionals in this field use advanced software and equipment to ensure systems run efficiently and respond quickly to any issues. They play a critical role in preventing disruptions, optimizing performance, and ensuring safety standards are met. System Control jobs often require technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in high-pressure environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a system control professional?

To thrive as a System Control professional, you need a solid understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, systems analysis, and a relevant engineering degree or technical certification. Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLC programming, and industry-standard control software is commonly required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you respond quickly to system issues and coordinate with team members. These competencies ensure reliable system operations, minimize downtime, and support safe, efficient performance in critical infrastructure environments.

How does a system control professional typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

System Control professionals often work closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of critical systems. Regular communication is necessary to coordinate planned outages, respond to system alerts, and implement operational improvements. This role may also involve participating in cross-functional meetings to discuss system performance, troubleshoot issues, and develop strategies for optimizing processes. Effective collaboration ensures smooth workflows and minimizes downtime, making teamwork a key aspect of the position.

What is the difference between System Control vs Control Room Operator?

AspectSystem ControlControl Room Operator
Required credentialsTypically requires technical certifications or training in control systemsOften requires operational training and sometimes certifications in safety procedures
Work environmentOperates in control centers managing complex systems like power plants or manufacturing linesWorks in control rooms monitoring and managing equipment in industrial or utility settings
Employer and industry usageCommon in utilities, manufacturing, and energy sectorsPrevalent in utilities, transportation, and industrial facilities

System Control and Control Room Operator roles share similarities in monitoring and managing systems, but System Control often involves overseeing complex, integrated control systems with specialized certifications, while Control Room Operators focus on operational oversight and safety procedures within specific facilities.

What can you do with system control?

A system control professional manages and monitors computer systems, networks, or industrial processes to ensure proper operation and security. They may configure hardware and software, troubleshoot issues, and implement system updates, often using specialized tools and following safety protocols.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform tasks related to developing HMIs/GUIs for operation and testing of power converters.

  • Design and test electrical components such as PCBs, embedded control algorithms, and electrical simulation models.

  • Develop test plans, conduct testing of magnetic components, analyze test data, and prepare reports and presentations.

Job description

RCT Systems, Power Systems Division, is seeking Electrical Engineering interns/co-ops to join our team for the summer and regular semester co-op. Note that we are no longer accepting applications for summer-only employment; however, we remain open to internships/co-ops that begin in the summer and continue through the fall. Please indicate your desired term of employment in your resume or cover letter.
Intern and entry-level applicants to RCT Systems Power Systems Division (PSD), without specific experience or education in power conversion and/or power systems, are encouraged to provide cover letters to their resume/CV that address the gap between their background and the core work that we perform here at RCT PSD (solid-state power conversion).
Electrical Engineering interns will perform in one or more of several different areas including:
  • Develop HMIs/GUIs for operation and testing of power converters.
  • Detailed PCB design including system control PCBs and support hardware.
  • Design and test embedded control algorithms for DSPs, FPGAs, and PLC controllers.
  • Develop Controller-Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) test setups, control cards, and control algorithms using Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) real-time simulators.
  • Design and debug electrical simulation models used to derisk test setups.
  • Testing of magnetic components (inductors, transformers).
  • Develop test plans and procedures for systems nearing design completion.
  • Analyze collected test data and develop reports and presentations.

Minimum Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship is required due to US Government ITAR program restrictions.Must indicate citizenship status on individual documents submitted with the application (resume/CV or cover letter itself)- applications not identifying citizenship status on the submitted documents will *not* be considered.Note that even if you have an active security clearance, you must identify citizenship on your submitted application documents.
  • Minimum 3.3 GPA
  • 3rd year undergraduate minimum, MS and PhD students a plus
  • Applicants to the internship/co-op program, who are pursuing power electronics or power systems as an undergraduate focus area or graduate studies program are highly preferred/desired.

Desired Skillset:
  • Self-motivated individual; research experience a plus
  • Experience with electrical simulation software such PLECS, SPICE, PSIM, Simulink, or DSIM
  • Experience implementing communication interfaces (CAN, RS485, Modbus, I2C, high speed fiber, others)
  • Experience applying embedded software for motor drives, AC-DC, DC-DC, and DC-AC converters
  • Experience programming various microcontrollers, DSP, and/or FPGAs, such as TI C2000 or Xilinx
  • Hands-on experience with PLECS RT Boxes, Typhoon HIL Simulators, or other HIL platforms
  • Experience with PCB design software such as Altium or KiCAD
  • Experience with semiconductor technologies such as Silicon (Si), Silicon-Carbide (SiC), or Gallium-Nitride (GaN)
  • Experience working with 3-phase power systems

RCT Systems PSD produces high power density, wide bandgap semiconductor-based power converters for military and commercial applications. RCT offers competitive pay, a fast-paced R&D work environment, with a design, build, and high-voltage test site in Baltimore, MD. The internship/co-op is in-person only (no remote work), and located at our offices in Baltimore, MD.
