How much do system architects make in the US?

System architects in the US typically earn a median annual salary of around $120,000, with experienced professionals earning over $150,000. Salaries vary based on experience, industry, location, and certifications such as TOGAF or AWS certifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Architect, you need a deep understanding of system design, software engineering principles, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with architectural frameworks (such as TOGAF), modeling tools (like UML), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), as well as relevant certifications, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and leadership abilities help System Architects translate business requirements into technical solutions and guide development teams. These skills are crucial for creating scalable, secure, and efficient systems that align with organizational goals.

What does a system architect do?

A system architect designs and oversees the structure of complex IT systems, ensuring they meet business requirements and are scalable, reliable, and secure. They analyze system needs, create technical specifications, and coordinate with development teams, often using modeling tools and industry standards. Strong technical knowledge and communication skills are essential for this role.

Both require strong technical skills and certifications, but their focus areas and work environments differ significantly.

How does a system architect typically collaborate with other teams during a project lifecycle?

System Architects play a central role in bridging technical and business teams throughout a project's lifecycle. They work closely with stakeholders to understand requirements, coordinate with developers to ensure technical feasibility, and consult with operations teams to plan for deployment and maintenance. Regular meetings, documentation reviews, and design workshops are common ways System Architects maintain alignment and ensure the system's architecture meets both functional and non-functional needs. Successful collaboration often relies on strong communication skills and a deep understanding of both business goals and technical constraints.

The Senior System Architect is responsible for designing, building, deploying, and supporting AI-driven solutions end-to-end, leveraging Verathon's unified data platform. This role intentionally combines Data Scientist, ML Engineer, and AI Solutions Architect responsibilities into a single senior position focused on delivering production-ready AI capabilities that directly support business outcomes.

This position partners closely with business stakeholders and the Data Engineering team to translate AI initiatives into scalable, secure, and usable systems that enable analytics, automation, prediction, and decision support across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the full AI/ML lifecycle hands-on, including:
  • Use-case evaluation and problem definition
  • Feature engineering and data preparation
  • Model selection, experimentation, training, and tuning
  • Model validation and performance evaluation
  • Deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimization
  • Design and implement production-grade AI and ML systems, supporting both batch and real-time inference patterns.
  • Build and maintain AI-powered applications, dashboards, and decision-support tools that enable business users to leverage advanced analytics and automation.
  • Lead enterprise AI enablement initiatives, including:
  • Generative AI and large language model (LLM) use cases (e.g., research, analytics, summarization, and knowledge discovery)
  • Predictive and prescriptive analytics
  • Intelligent automation of business processes
  • Evaluate, prototype, and recommend AI platforms and tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Glean, Azure AI services, and other third-party solutions) based on security, scalability, compliance, and business value.
  • Architect AI solutions leveraging Verathon's unified data platform, defining:
  • Data and feature requirements
  • Modeling and semantic layers
  • Model-serving and system integration patterns
  • Translate AI initiatives into clear technical and data requirements for the Data Engineering team, ensuring data pipelines support AI and advanced analytics use cases.
  • Establish and follow best practices for AI development, including model lifecycle management, monitoring, responsible AI, and governance.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and deliver high-impact AI use cases that improve efficiency, insight, and decision-making.
  • Stay current with emerging AI and ML technologies and proactively identify opportunities to apply them at Verathon.
  • Ensure all AI systems comply with Verathon's System Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Computer Systems Validation, security, and data governance policies.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, solution designs, and training materials for AI-enabled systems.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with 6+ years of experience, or Master's degree with 4+ years of experience, in AI/ML, data engineering, analytics, computer science, or related fields.
  • Proven hands-on experience delivering end-to-end AI/ML solutions in production environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform both Data Scientist and ML Engineer responsibilities within a single role.
  • Strong understanding of data architecture concepts, including data lakes, lakehouse patterns, and layered data modeling.
  • Experience working with cloud-based data and AI platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure.
  • Hands-on familiarity with Generative AI and LLM-based solutions, including evaluation and implementation of enterprise AI tools.
  • Strong software engineering mindset applied to ML systems, including testing, monitoring, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and data analytics concepts.
  • Experience building AI-enabled applications, dashboards, or analytical tools consumed by business users.
  • Ability to independently design and deliver solutions while collaborating effectively across teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
  • Experience with Agile and/or Waterfall methodologies and SDLC best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex AI concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • High integrity, strong attention to detail, and excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.

Salary range - $162,096.00 - $187,000.00 (Compensation will vary based on skills, experience and location; it is not typical to be hired at or above the top of the salary range).
