What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a System Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Architect, you need a deep understanding of system design, software engineering principles, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with architectural frameworks (such as TOGAF), modeling tools (like UML), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), as well as relevant certifications, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and leadership abilities help System Architects translate business requirements into technical solutions and guide development teams. These skills are crucial for creating scalable, secure, and efficient systems that align with organizational goals.

What does a System Architect do?

A System Architect is responsible for designing and overseeing the overall structure of complex IT systems. They create high-level solutions to meet business requirements, ensuring that software, hardware, and network components work together seamlessly. System Architects collaborate with stakeholders, developers, and engineers to define technical standards, select appropriate technologies, and guide projects from conception to implementation. Their role is critical for ensuring systems are scalable, secure, and efficient.

Both require strong technical skills and certifications, but their focus areas and work environments differ significantly.

How does a System Architect typically collaborate with other teams during a project lifecycle?

System Architects play a central role in bridging technical and business teams throughout a project's lifecycle. They work closely with stakeholders to understand requirements, coordinate with developers to ensure technical feasibility, and consult with operations teams to plan for deployment and maintenance. Regular meetings, documentation reviews, and design workshops are common ways System Architects maintain alignment and ensure the system's architecture meets both functional and non-functional needs. Successful collaboration often relies on strong communication skills and a deep understanding of both business goals and technical constraints.

  • Support root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement efforts tied to SLA and performance objectives.

  • Ensure designs are supportable in 24x7x365 operations, including change/release coordination and lifecycle management.

Security, Compliance, and Integration Governance

  • Provide technical leadership for system integration, scalability, and security architecture across multi-vendor platforms.

  • Embed security controls and compliance requirements into infrastructure and platform designs.

  • Ensure architectural approaches support FISMA-aligned controls, vulnerability remediation, and secure configuration baselines.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to align technical solutions with SEC policy, risk, and operational governance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • This position is restricted to U.S. citizens only. Applicants must not hold dual citizenship with any other country to be eligible for work under this contract.

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering) and 12+ years of experience in engineering and architecting enterprise IT systems.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain SEC Public Trust.

  • Proven experience managing multi-discipline server and system operations teams.

  • Demonstrated experience translating functional requirements into enterprise technical solutions and leading integration/scalability efforts.

  • Must possess Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) - Server Infrastructure certification, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.

  • Enterprise infrastructure design and architecture.

  • Multi-vendor server operating systems.

  • Virtualization and cloud integration architecture.

  • System integration and scalability architecture.

  • Technology evaluation, POC/pilot execution, and solution validation.

  • Cross-functional technical leadership and stakeholder communication.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert, AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, TOGAF (or equivalent enterprise architecture certification).

  • Experience supporting U.S. federal IT environments with FISMA/NIST/OMB compliance requirements.

  • Experience architecting or supporting observability platforms and enterprise monitoring integrations in large environments.

  • Hands-on experience with container platforms and automation frameworks (e.g., OpenShift, Kubernetes, Ansible, GitOps toolchains).

  • Experience leading architecture initiatives in 24x7x365 enterprise operations organizations.
